Real Madrid v Liverpool: Betting tips, predictions, odds & match preview
Liverpool have a mountain to climb when they travel to face Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie on Wednesday at 8pm (UK time).
Liverpool’s confidence will have been high going into their first leg against Real Madrid, even given the stature of their opponents, as the Reds had started to build some form. Back-to-back 2-0 wins over Everton and Newcastle brought strong performances from Jurgen Klopp’s side, and all Liverpool needed to do was to get a decent result against Real Madrid to keep their chances of reaching the quarter-finals high.
Things were going swimmingly too, as the Reds led 2-0 after 14 minutes but then the capitulation came. By half-time it was 2-2 and Real Madrid eventually left Anfield with a 5-2 victory and a strong foot in the quarter-finals. Only four sides have progressed from a Champions League tie having lost the first leg by three or more goals at home, but Liverpool are one of those to do so, when they came back from 3-0 down to beat Barcelona 4-0 in the 2018/19 semi-finals.
Liverpool followed the defeat to Real Madrid with a goalless draw against Crystal Palace but they beat Wolves 2-0 and Manchester United 7-0, once again lifting spirits at Anfield. However, they had the worst possible preparation on the weekend, losing 1-0 to Bournemouth. Real Madrid, meanwhile, beat Liverpool to cap a five-game winning run which also saw them claim the Club World Cup. But Los Blancos have struggled slightly since.
After beating Liverpool last month, Real Madrid went winless in three matches across all competitions, starting with a draw against Atletico Madrid in the league. Real Madrid were then beaten 1-0 by Barcelona in what was a dismal display in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals, before another draw with Real Betis. They did return to winning ways at the weekend, however, beating Espanyol 3-1.

Real Madrid v Liverpool match stats
Vinicius Junior simply loves playing vs Liverpool, netting against the Reds more times than he has any other side in the Champions League (five). The Brazilian bagged a brace at Anfield and also scored twice in the 3-1 win in the 2021 quarter-finals played at the Alfredo Di Stefano, so will now be looking to become just the second player to score 2+ goals in a Champions League game at three different venues against an opponent. The first, of course, is Cristiano Ronaldo who bagged braces against Juventus at the Allianz Stadium, Bernabeu and Principality.
As the side chasing, Liverpool will have to take some risks at the Bernabeu which could leave them vulnerable at the back, especially with Vinicius ready to counter. It could lead to Liverpool racking up the cards, and the Reds have been shown nine yellow cards in the Champions League this season, compared to Real Madrid’s six.
