How both teams go into Everton vs Liverpool

The dark clouds have receded around Goodison Park recently, with the returning David Moyes leading them to consecutive victories over Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton and Leicester. Those results have significantly eased the relegation worries around the blue half of Merseyside, with Everton now nine points clear of the bottom three. Focus must remain high, however, with Everton welcoming the league leaders to Goodison Park.

A rotated Liverpool side lost 3-2 to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League last Wednesday. However, they still topped the table, just as they do in the Premier League. In fact, consecutive wins over Brentford, Ipswich and Bournemouth have left the Reds six points clear of Arsenal, with this Merseyside derby counting as their game in hand over the Gunners, so they’ll want to take full advantage.

This fixture has been highly anticipated after it was originally meant to take place on December 7th, only to be postponed due to Storm Darragh.

Everton team news

Armando Broja is out long-term, with Everton still trying to convince Chelsea to end his loan. Dwight McNeil could also require surgery, keeping him out for longer than expected. However, Everton could welcome back Seamus Coleman, Tim Ioregbunam and Youssef Chermiti for this match. Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Oriel Mangala remain sidelined.

Liverpool team news

Joe Gomez is unlikely to recover in time for this match, but Arne Slot could have a full squad available otherwise. Much rests on the fitness of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is currently rated at 50/50.

Everton vs Liverpool head-to-head

Everton broke a five-match winless streak against Liverpool in their last encounter. The Toffees last achieved consecutive victories over their rivals in October 1984, during a stretch where they secured three wins in a row (August 1984-October 1985) against the Reds. That was during a run of two league titles in three years for Everton.
