Club Brugge vs Aston Villa prediction, stats, tips & team news

As we reach the halfway stage of the 2024-25 Champions League league phase, Aston Villa will be hoping to take a step closer to the knockout stages when they take on Club Brugge on Wednesday at 17:45 UK time.

It has been a dream return to Europe’s premier club competition for Aston Villa. The 1982 European Cup champions have done their history proud, and Unai Emery has continued to build upon his great reputation for success in UEFA competition having won the Europa League with Sevilla three times in a row, with Villarreal in 2020, and reaching the final with Arsenal in 2019 as well.

Aston Villa capitulated to Tottenham in their last Premier League game at the weekend, but this is unlikely to have much bearing on the performance in midweek. Villa’s consistency in the Champions League has been remarkable, for an inexperienced Champions League club, but many of the individual players have high level experience themselves.

Club Brugge still have hopes of reaching the play-off round in this format, with three points from their three matchdays. The Belgians did suffer a 0-3 home defeat to Dortmund on Matchday 1, but followed that with a win at Sturm Graz on Matchday 2, and a 1-3 defeat in the San Siro to AC Milan last time out. Domestically, Brugge sit just behind leaders Genk in the league, with 24 points from 13 matches. They are six matches unbeaten in Belgium.

Aston Villa to win to nil (3/1 with PaddyPower)

Club Brugge have lost their past three Champions League home games, all without scoring. Porto, Benfica and Borussia Dortmund have all beaten Club Brugge, by a combined scoreline of 9-0. With the injury sustained to Gustaf Nilsson, Brugge have struggled to get consistent returns from their number nine as well, with youngster Vermant likely to be starting his first ever Champions League match.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are yet to concede a goal in the Champions League so far this season and with Unai Emery’s famed attention to detail, and the likely use of the high line, which Club Brugge will not be used to operating against, all of the ingredients are there to make this a good value bet.

Highest scoring half: Second (Evs with PaddyPower)

Club Brugge’s poor home run in the Champions League has often been down to their opponents’ quality eventually shining through. Of the nine goals Club Brugge have conceded in their past three Champions League home games, eight have come after half-time. Dortmund’s three goals last time out all came in the final 15 minutes. Also, in the Milan match, three of the four goals in that match came after half-time.

Whilst Aston Villa are likely to want to forget the weekend’s events, it is also notable that they conceded four times in the second half against Tottenham. Villa’s Champions League campaign so far has seen four second half goals to two, all of their goals in the last two CL Matchdays have been in the second half.

How to watch Club Brugge vs Aston Villa live

Club Brugge vs Aston Villa is scheduled for 5:45pm (UK time) on Wednesday 6th November and will be broadcast live on TNT Sports 2.

How both teams go into Club Brugge vs Aston Villa

This will be Aston Villa’s fourth Champions League game this season, and it could put them in a good position to qualify for the knockout stages. The top eight teams qualify directly into the last 16, and Villa will be hoping for one of those spots.

But even if they drop out, Villa should be on course for at least a seeded spot in the knockout phase play-offs. Villa started the Champions League with three wins in a row, beating Young Boys, Bayern Munich, and Bologna. While the Bayern victory was massive for belief, the wins over Young Boys and Bologna demonstrated that Villa are not just here for experience, they are winning the games that they need to win to establish themselves as genuine European competitors.

Villa’s domestic form took a bit of a hit last week as they were knocked out of the EFL Cup at home to Crystal Palace, and then were very much below par when beating beaten 1-4 by Tottenham. This means that Villa’s last win was that Bologna Champions League success back on 22nd October, so they will be hoping to replicate their European form rather than their domestic form when they travel to Belgium on Wednesday.

Club Brugge have taken three points from their opening three Champions League games this season. They had a terrible start to the competition, beaten 3-0 at home to least season’s runners-up Borussia Dortmund, and they were also soundly beaten by AC Milan in the San Siro.

However, their 1-0 away away at Sturm Graz in their second match leaves them in a position where it remains possible to qualify for a play-off berth, but the fixture list is looking tough, not least when entertaining Aston Villa in Matchday 4.

Domestically, the Blue and Blacks are going well in defence of their title, sitting in second place, albeit they are seven points behind leaders Genk.

Club Brugge host Aston Villa at the Jan Breydel Stadium on Wednesday 6th November at 5:45pm (UK time).

Club Brugge team news

Gustaf Nilsson is out with a calf injury, missing the October international break for Sweden and he hasn’t yet returned to a matchday squad. This has left a bit of a hole in the number nine position for Brugge, Ferran Jutgla played here against Milan, but has since lost his starting place to young Belgian Romeo Vermant, who scored a vital goal in the recent win over Anderlecht, so he may get the nod here. Andreas Skov Olsen also started at the weekend having not started against AC Milan. Nicky Hayen has an unchanged squad to pick from after the weekend.

Expected line-up: Mignolet; Sabbe, Ordonez, Mechele, De Cuyper; Jashari, Onyedika; Olsen, Vanaken, Tzolis; Vermant

Aston Villa team news

Ross Barkley’s knock has had a small impact on Unai Emery’s options ahead of this clash, but he is likely to go with a midfield of Amadou Onana and Youri Tielemans. There are decisions to be made at right back where Ezri Konsa played against Bologna, but Matty Cash has been a regular, and, of course, up front where Jhon Duran and Ollie Watkins continue to do battle for the starting slot.

Expected line-up: Martinez; Konsa, Diego Carlos, Pau Torres, Digne; Onana, Tielemans; McGinn, Rogers, Ramsey; Watkins
