DFB-Pokal Predictions & Betting Tips

The DFB-Pokal is the most prestigious domestic cup in Germany and is treated as such by the country’s powerhouse clubs. Bayern Munich are the most successful club with 20 titles, but RB Leipzig (two titles) enter the 2023/24 season as the defending champions.

Sorry, but there are currently no tips for the current league "DFB-Pokal Predictions & Betting Tips", but you can check out our tips for other leagues below.

Croatia's win over Poland extended their unbeaten run in their home country to three matches. Scotland, meanwhile, haven't won a competitive game outside of Scotland since a 3-0 win over Cyprus in September 2023. Since then, Scotland have lost five games and drawn once.

Alongside their agonising defeats comes the fact that Scotland have conceded the last goal in each of their two Uefa Nations League matches so far. In fact, Scotland have conceded the last goal in eight of their nine games across all competitions in 2024. At the same time, Croatia have scored the last goal in their two Uefa Nations League matches.

Since a 1-0 defeat to Colombia at the start of 2024, Spain have won nine of their 12 matches across all competitions. The three draws do also include an extra-time win over Germany at Euro 2024, which will have settled as a draw for betting purposes. But Spain have conceded in five of their past six matches.

Squawka Betting Tip

Portugal won both international outings in September with 2-1 victories over Scotland and Croatia. Roberto Martinez’s men are fancied to get the job done and Poland have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last seven across all formats. Poland have a strong home record when it comes to finding the net. They have scored at least one goal in all their last 11 matches across all competitions. Bruno Fernandes was booked on his most recent international outing and has already been sent off for Manchester United this term. Regarding fouls, he has conceded at least one in all of his last eight for Portugal.

Squawka Betting Tip

Ronaldo may be better known for his goal-scoring prowess, but at 17/2, he simply looks too big a price to record an assist against a Poland side that is far from watertight at the back. Ronaldo managed an assist at the Euros in the summer and has 18 in his international career. Sky Bet go just 7/2, and Paddy Power 4/1 he manages another in this game, so take the 17/2 on show with BetMGM.

Aleksandar Mitrovic can be a handful for defenders and with the result of this game looking tricky to predict, taking a punt on the Serbian attacker in the ‘fouls won’ market looks a nice angle. The former Fulham and Newcastle man has been fouled at least twice in six of his last nine appearances for Serbia with totals of: 3,2,2,0,4,0,1,3,2.

Breel Embolo may have only recorded two assists last season for Monaco, but he has already matched this total after just four appearances this season. The 27-year-old also turned provider on his most recent international outing against Spain, making three assists in his last five for club and country. Sky Bet go just 5/1 he assists on Saturday, giving plenty of appeal to the 23/2 that is available with BetMGM.

Squawka Betting Tip

Jason Knight should line up in the centre of midfield for the Republic of Ireland. The Bristol City man gave away two fouls in the win over Finland on Thursday and looks a little overpriced to clear the 1+ line against Greece. Knight has given away 2+ fouls in both of his last two internationals and four of his previous six for club and country. Paired with Knight to give away 1+ foul is Vangelis Pavlidis. The attacker was in the middle of everything against England and put in a superb showing. Pavlidis committed two fouls against the Three Lions and averages 1 foul per game for Benfica this season.

Squawka Betting Tip

England have failed to score more than two goals in all of their last eleven matches across all competitions, with all those contests featuring fewer than four goals. Finland’s chances of a top-two finish are slim, and they must pick up a result here if they stand any chance of doing so. Two of England’s last five wins have finished with a 2-1 scoreline.

Squawka Betting Tip

England were far from convincing in their 2-1 defeat to Greece on Thursday and showed their frailties at the back. Carsley’s side could have conceded a lot more than two goals and they will have to step up and put in a much improved showing here. England are still expected to get the win, but there is plenty of scope for Finland to get on the scoresheet after finding the net in six of their last seven home matches across all formats.

Robbie Brady may now be 32, but he is still making an impact for his national side and popped up with the winning goal for the Republic of Ireland against Finland on Thursday. Brady let off three shots in that game and also managed an assist in what was an excellent performance. He may not take up quite an as attacking role as he used to in previous years, but at 20/1 to find the net anytime, he looks a juicy price with Sky Bet for a small punt.

Unlike England where clubs compete in two domestic knockout tournaments (the FA Cup and League Cup), Germany has only one major cup competition, the DFB-Pokal.

The competition is steeped in history having seen its inaugural season take place in 1935 when Nurnberg claimed the first title in front of 55,000 fans at the Rheinstadion against Schalke 04.

Nearly a century later and the tournament is still going strong, with its reputation well-regarded in Germany among elite clubs, particularly as winning the tournament grants you access to the Europa League.

Of course, most winners already have some form of continental football by virtue of their Bundesliga position, but the beauty of the cup is such that anyone can take home the coveted trophy.

It’s also a chance for amateur clubs to test themselves against the perennial heavyweights, and there have been some major giantkillings over the years, including this season.

Harry Kane’s chances of doing the Treble in his first season in Germany have already come crashing down after Bayern were knocked out of the competition by 3. Bundesliga side Saarbrucken thanks to a stoppage time winner from 34-year-old Marcel Gaus.

In 2021/22 Wolfsburg were also shocked by a lower league side, being knocked out by fourth tier Preussen Munster and Bayer Leverkusen by Rot-Weiss Essen in 2020/21.

Indeed it’s a competition with prestige, emotion and unpredictability. RB Leipzig have passed up the chance of winning the competition three years in a row, losing to Wolfsburg in the second round in what was a tough draw. So there will be fresh holders this season, the question is who?

Well, another team it won’t be is Borussia Dortmund, who were knocked out by Stuttgart in the round of 16. In fact, the quarter-finals consists of just three Bundesliga teams, with the top tier represented by Borussia Monchengladbach, Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart. Saarbrucken are still going strong, drawn against Gladbach, while Hertha Berlin, Fortuna Dusseldorf, Kaiserslautern and St. Pauli make up the 2. Bundesliga representation.

Could we have a winner from outside of the top tier? There are guaranteed to be at least two non-Bundesliga sides in the semi-finals, with Hertha Berlin drawn against Kaiserslautern and St. Pauli taking on Fortuna Dusseldorf.

When does Squawka release its DFB-Pokal Predictions?

We aim to give our readers plenty of time to check our betting tips for upcoming DFB-Pokal matches and, as such, we look to get these tips live between 24 and 48 hours before kick-off. However, that time frame can fluctuate on occasion due to fixture congestion.

You’ll find our best tips for the DFB-Pokal on this page during every round, and for the biggest matches we’ll even have specially-picked match previews, written by our Squawka Bet experts who have extensive knowledge of German football.

What betting markets are popular for the DFB-Pokal?

Given the earlier rounds usually match up so-called minnows against Germany’s perennial big boys, the scope for high-scoring affairs is typically more pronounced and commonplace.

Where Europe’s other major footballing nations tend to introduce the heavyweights in the latter phases (the third round for the League Cup and FA Cup for European-competing clubs in England, while some Serie A sides join the Coppa Italia at the Round of 16!), Germany brings everyone in from the start, including Bayern Munich.

As such, your best bet is to look for markets that offer odds for lots of goals, wins to nil and goals in both halves. Bayern, for example, beat Viktoria Cologne 5-0 in Round One last season, Bremer SV 12-0 the campaign prior and Duren 3-0 in 2020/21.

DFB-Pokal Accumulators

As the DFB-Pokal has set weekends and the best clubs in the competition from the start, there are plenty of opportunities to try your hand at football accumulator betting

With accumulator betting, you grow your odds while staking an interest in a multitude of games, perfect for the DFB-Pokal.

However, this season has proven that games can be tough to call, so make sure to keep track of form and follow the research.

Over 2.5 goals

The chances of high-scoring games between the giants of the Cup and the so-called little teams makes this particular betting market a highly attractive one.

As mentioned, with all the big clubs in the mix from the off, the potential for high-scoring games increases, hence the interest in over 2.5 goals scored.

This season alone that have been a handful of victories by at least seven goals, and three last 16 ties had at least four goals scored (including a 3-3 draw)!

‘To go through’ Bets

If you’re a little nervous about making ‘exact’ predictions, this is the market for you.

Of course, winners might be easy to predict on paper, but this season more than most has proven that games are won on the pitch. Who would have predicted some of the results we’ve seen, or bigger teams taking a little more time to get through.

Here you’ll simply bet on which team you think will make it through to the next round, with no pressure on guessing the scorelines, or, indeed, scorers.

DFB-Pokal Inplay betting tips

In play betting has seen a real increase in popularity in recent years, with punters wanting to get involved with the action more than ever. Many firms now offer cash-out bets, live in-play odds and in the case of the DFB-Pokal, you can even watch live matches with some bookmakers as you place your in-play bets – bet365 are particularly on the ball with this feature.

So if you think one of the underdogs has the potential to eliminate a Bundesliga side in the quarter-finals, you can bet on that with a few simple taps of your phone on your chosen app. There are plenty of other markets to choose from when it comes to in-play betting though, including which team will score next, which player will score next, whether there will be a goal before a certain time in the game, and so many more. Sky Bet are among the top bookmakers to offer inplay bets.

Full Time Results

Full time result markets can often offer more to a punter than in straight Bundesliga games. Commonly when opponents are mismatched, you’ll find top-flight teams shuffling the pack and deploying weaker XIs, which could give you the advantage when it comes to backing the opposition, maximising the value of the odds.

In this bet, you’re simply backing which team you believe will win the match and it should not be confused with a correct score bet, where you are betting on the exact full-time scoreline at the end of 90 minutes.

Some of the more recent giantkillings in the DFB-Pokal include:

  • 2023/24: Saarbrucken 2-1 Bayern Munich (Round Two)
  • 2021/22: Preussen Munster 2-0 Wolfsburg (Round One)
  • 2021/22: Babelsberg 2-2 (5-4p) Greuther Furth (Round One)
  • 2020/21: Rot-Weiss Essen 2-1 Bayer Leverkusen (Round of 16)
  • 2020/21: Rot-Weiss Essen 1-0 Arminia Bielefeld (Round One)
  • 2019/20: Saarbrucken 1-1 (7-6p) Dusseldorf (Quarter-finals)
  • 2019/20: Saarbrucken 3-2 Cologne (Round Two)
  • 2019/20: Verl 2-1 Augsburg (Round One)
  • 2018/19: Ulm 2-1 Eintracht Frankfurt (Round One)

*Bundesliga clubs in bold

The DFB-Pokal takes place throughout the German football season, starting with Round One in August, welcoming 64 clubs, including the 36 teams from the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga, while the top 4 finishers of the 3. Liga are also drafted in. The remaining spaces are then dished out to the representatives of the 21 regional associations (Bavaria, Berlin, Hesse, Saxony, Westphalia, etc), with 24 places up for grabs. These are typically handed to very obscure and often amateur clubs, offering a kaleidoscopic variability of German football.
