Man City entered the World Cup break on a low, losing 2-1 to Brentford which allowed Arsenal to open up a five-point gap at the top of the Premier League table. It was Man City’s second defeat in five matches, having also lost to Liverpool, and saw them lose some control of the title race — though many still have them as title favourites.

But Pep Guardiola’s side regrouped during the break, even with a number of players at the World Cup, and have returned with a bang. First they beat Liverpool in the EFL fourth round, to set up a quarter-final tie against Southampton, before returning to the Premier League with a 3-1 win over Leeds.

Everton, meanwhile, may have been wishing the World Cup never ended. Last season had a happy ending for Everton as they escaped what appeared to be nailed on relegation in their penultimate match. The hope was that, in Frank Lampard’s first full season in charge, the Toffees would put relegation battling firmly behind them.

However, Everton are just one point and once place above the drop zone and winless in their past five Premier League matches. After beating Crystal Palace, Everton drew with Fulham and then lost to Leicester and Bournemouth, but their return seemed to be going well when they went 1-0 up against Wolves. But they let the Midlands club back into the game and eventually fell to a late defeat, which allowed Wolves to close the gap.

Man City vs Everton match stats

The Premier League belongs to Erling Haaland. We don’t make the rules, it just does. The Norwegian broke another record in the win over Leeds, reaching 20 Premier League goals faster than any other player in the competition’s history, needing just 14 matches. Unfortunately for Everton, Haaland particularly likes playing at home, with 17 goals in 11 games at the Etihad across all competitions.

Also in the win over Leeds, Jack Grealish earned the hatred of the home fans who took delight every time he was kicked or fouled, which was a regular occurrence. The Englishman has won on average 3.18 fouls per 90 minutes in the Premier League this season, with only two players winning more among those with at least 300 minutes played.
