Who is Gilberto Mora? The Mexico wonderkid wanted by Liverpool, Barcelona and Real Madrid

Mexico midfielder Gilberto Mora in action at the 2026 World Cup

Gilberto Mora made history at the 2026 World Cup.

The pint-sized creator replaced Brian Gutierrez midway through the second-half of Mexico’s tournament-opening 2-0 win over South Africa. In doing so, he became the youngest player to ever represent El Tri at a World Cup. Incidentally, that moment wasn’t even the beginning of Mora’s story.

“The sky’s the limit for him,” then-Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre preach of Mora following last year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup semi-final win over Honduras. Mora had just set up Raul Jimenez’s winning goal off the bench. “He’s got bags of talent and he’s Mexican, so we can consider ourselves very lucky,” Aguirre said.

Mora turns 18 later this month. Despite his tender years, the Mexican star is already attracting watchful glances from across Europe. Liverpool have been credited with an interest. As have Borussia Dortmund and Benfica. La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid are said to be keeping tabs on the Club Tijuana teenager. The race to land Mexico’s next top talent is well and truly on.

Gilberto Mora’s beginnings

Football runs in Mora’s blood. The son of former Tijuana midfielder Gilberto Mora Olayo, the 58-year-old is currently assistant manager of his former side having held a number of off-pitch roles for the Mexican side in 2015.

Mora junior joined the Tijuana ranks back in 2019 and was fast-tracked for the first team in 2024. And at 15 years of age, he made his league debut against Santos Laguna. He replaced Efrain Alvarez for the final knockings of an eventual 3-1 victory. What’s more, he provided an assist off the bench in a moment to savour.

In the years since, Mora has become a first-team regular for Los Xolos, making 57 league appearances and netting 13 goals. It’s only a matter of time before one of football’s elite sides snaps up the Mexico international.

Of course, performing in Liga MX is entirely different to shining in Europe’s biggest leagues. Even so, it’s no surprise that the likes of Liverpool, Barcelona and Real Madrid, to name three, are casting watchful glances towards Tijuana.

Mora’s style of play

What stands out most about Mora is his size. Standing at just 5ft6in, Mora isn’t the most intimidating attacking presence. However, he uses his height to his advantage. Indeed, he possesses an incredibly low centre of gravity that allows him to wriggle his way out of danger. Despite making four appearances at the 2026 World Cup, Mora was dispossessed just three times in North America over the summer.

“What stood out most to me was his turning controls; with a single movement, he could turn and control the ball,” former Tijuana boss Juan Carlos Osorio said of Mora last year. In the same interview, Osorio compared the player to former Barcelona hero Andres Iniesta. The comparison isn’t a surprise. Iniesta was one of the best during his playing days, maximising his agility to shake off pressure and set his side on the frontfoot.

Just as Iniesta in his pomp, opponents often seek to overwhelm Mora, but he boasts the incredible close control that enables him to shake off pressure. Saying that, there are times where these physical shortcoming works against Mora. Of the nine take ons he attempted at the World Cup, only two were successful. In short, he does need to bulk up in order to deal with the physicality that does come with lining up against older opposition.

Height isn’t an issue

The height, though, isn’t a major concern. Argentina hero Lionel Messi stands at just 5ft7in. So, too, is Iniesta. Mora is the same height as French ball-winning machine and two-time Premier League winner N’Golo Kante. Potential suitors shouldn’t be put off by Mora’s size, and instead look to use this to their advantage.

After all, Mora is a player who is adept at drifting across the attacking third in pursuit of possession. The knack of finding space allows Mora to shake off markers and take up dangerous areas where he can really hurt teams. He has the confidence to constantly ask for the ball from teammates, and subsequently turn to face goal when he does receive possession. This trait won’t have been lost on interested parties.

And as the January transfer window edges closer to opening, the New Year could signal a new beginning for Mora. Is he truly ready for a switch to Europe? Perhaps not, but teams are understandably willing to take the risk on Mexico’s emerging talent.
