As the 2026/27 season creaks into life, PSG vs Aston Villa takes centre stage as the Champions League winners face the Europa League victors in the 2026 Uefa Super Cup in Salzburg on Wednesday 12th August (8pm).

1. PSG can become the third club to retain the Super Cup
There have only been 11 multiple winners of the Super Cup. Of those, only AC Milan (1989 & 1990) and Real Madrid (2016 & 2017) have won the trophy in back-to-back seasons.
PSG won their first ever Super Cup last August after they staged a remarkable comeback to beat Tottenham on penalties. Now the French champions have the opportunity to join AC Milan and Real Madrid as back-to-back victors.

2. Aston Villa can end the longest wait between Super Cup triumphs
Aston Villa’s one and only Super Cup win came in the 1982 edition when they beat Barcelona 3-1 on aggregate.
Should Villa lift the trophy in Wednesday’s 2026 final, they would end a 44-year wait between Super Cup successes, setting a new record for the longest gap between victories in the competition.
The current longest gap stands at 24 years, shared by Liverpool, who won in 1977 and 2001, and Valencia, who triumphed in 1980 and 2004.

3. Aston Villa can end an eight year Europa League drought
Atletico Madrid are the only Europa League club to win the Super Cup since Zenit back in 2008. Atletico have done so on three different occasions in 2010, 2012, and most recently in 2018.
The last seven editions of the Super Cup have all gone to the Champions League holders, including in 2025 when PSG overcame Spurs.
4. England can move to 11 Super Cup wins
England have produced a Super Cup winner on 10 occasions: Liverpool (4), Chelsea (2), and one apiece for Aston Villa, Man City, Man Utd, and Nottingham Forest.
Villa can become only the third multiple winner from these shores, and the fourth winner from England in the last eight years.
Spain lead the way with 17 wins, 14 of which have come in the 21st century. Meanwhile, France’s sole success came courtesy of PSG last year.
5. Unai Emery could win the Super Cup for the first time
Unai Emery made more history last season when he extended his own record to an eye-popping five Europa League successes as a manager.
However, the Spaniard has surprisingly never won the Super Cup. He’s had three stabs at it, losing all three finals. Two came in charge of Sevilla in a 2-0 defeat by Real Madrid in 2014 followed by a 5-4 extra-time loss to Barcelona in 2015, then he lost again in 2021 when at the helm of Villarreal.
When Emery led Sevilla to Europa League glory for a third straight year in 2016 he left to take charge of PSG, who he will now face in Wednesday’s final.
6. Unai Emery could become the joint-fifth most decorated manager in Uefa club competition history
Emery has currently won five Uefa club competition trophies – all the Europa League – which puts him level in the all-time list alongside Bob Paisley, Zinedine Zidane, Nereo Rocco, Jose Mourinho, and Louis van Gaal.
A sixth trophy will jump the Spaniard above those handful of managers alongside Italian legend Arrigo Sacchi. That would leave only Carlo Ancelotti (11), Pep Guardiola, Sir Alex Ferguson, and Giovanni Trapattoni (all on 7) ahead of him among the most successful managers in Uefa club competition history.
7. Luis Enrique can become a three-time Super Cup winner
Luis Enrique is a two-time Super Cup winner, having triumphed with Barcelona in 2015 and PSG in 2025. He also won as a player back in 1997.
The Spaniard now has the opportunity to become only the third manager to lift the trophy on 3+ occasions after record five-time winner Carlo Ancelotti and four-time victor Pep Guardiola.
8. PSG can win a ninth trophy out of the last 11 available
PSG have won eight of the last 10 trophies on offer since the start of 2024/25. They have missed only the 2025 Club World Cup and last season’s Coupe de France during this remarkable run. Now they have the opportunity to further boost their trophy haul with a ninth piece of silverware in 11 attempts.

Lucas Digne completed his switch from Aston Villa to PSG on Sunday. The defender signed a three-year deal to return to the club he last played for in 2015.

10. Omar Artan will be the first non-European referee to officiate the Uefa Super Cup
Omar Artan is set to make history on Wednesday night. The 34-year-old Somalian will become the first non-European referee to oversee the UEFA Super Cup.
This highlight comes after the huge disappointment of missing out on the chance to officiate at the 2026 World Cup after he was refused entry to the United States because Somalia was on the country’s ban list.
Artan was Caf’s men’s referee of the year for 2025 and Wednesday’s Salzburg-based match will be his first match in Europe.
