Who is the referee for Argentina vs Switzerland? João Pinheiro’s stats and history ahead of World Cup quarter-final

Argentina vs Switzerland referee Joao Pinheiro

João Pinheiro is the Argentina vs Switzerland referee for the last of the World Cup quarter-finals. The Portuguese official is the youngest of the four men trusted with this stage — and one side already knows him well.

Pinheiro, 38, takes charge at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, with kick-off at 2am UK time in the early hours of Sunday. Compatriots Bruno Jesus and Luciano Maia run the lines, with Canada’s Drew Fischer as fourth official. A semi-final place is at stake, along with a serious move in the World Cup winner odds. As a result, every call will carry weight.

Who is João Pinheiro?

Born in Braga in 1988, Pinheiro reached the Primeira Liga in 2015. His FIFA badge followed a year later. He has since risen quickly through UEFA’s elite group, taking the 2025 UEFA Super Cup between PSG and Tottenham. This, though, is his first World Cup.

His numbers mark him out as a busy booker but a reluctant dismisser. He averages 4.49 yellow cards per game across 442 matches, per Transfermarkt. Among the quarter-final referees, only France vs Morocco official Facundo Tello cards more. By contrast, his 84 red cards work out at 0.19 per game, close to Spain vs Belgium referee Michael Oliver at the lenient end of the group.

Sunday will be Pinheiro’s third World Cup match. He took charge of Switzerland‘s 4-1 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the group stage, then South Africa 0-1 Canada in the round of 32. In other words, half of his World Cup CV already involves Sunday’s underdogs.

That Bosnia game supplied his only World Cup red card — a straight dismissal for Tarik Muharemović — and his only penalty, converted by Granit Xhaka in stoppage time. Both calls went Switzerland’s way. He has never refereed Argentina, though his first senior international, back in 2019, was Brazil vs Panama.

Argentina vs Switzerland referee: what can both sides expect?

Domestically, Pinheiro reaches for his pocket often. At this World Cup, however, he has been restrained: five bookings and one red across two matches. He also has previous with Switzerland, and Granit Xhaka will hardly mind the reunion. Both camps have selection calls to weigh too. Our Argentina vs Switzerland team news and predicted lineups cover those.

Unlike the other quarter-finals, there is no nationality subplot here. Portugal are already out of the tournament, so the Argentina vs Switzerland referee arrives free of awkward questions. The bigger test is the occasion. A first World Cup quarter-final, the reigning champions and a 38-year-old referee: Kansas City will tell us plenty about João Pinheiro.
