Brazil face Norway on Sunday 5th July (9pm UK time) at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford in what promises to be a cracking round of 16 clash at World Cup 2026.
Five-time winners Brazil left it late to overcome a spirited Japan in the round of 32, as did Norway who secured a late win of their own in the defeat of Senegal. The winner of this encounter will advance through to the quarter-finals where they will play either Mexico or England.
Brazil vs Norway predictions & betting tips
| Our Prediction | Odds & Bookmaker | Confidence | Why We’re Backing It |
|---|---|---|---|
| Erling Haaland to score 1+ goals including extra time | 6/4 @ Sky Bet (40%) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Erling Haaland’s winner against Ivory Coast saw him become the fastest player in history to score 60 international goals, which he did in just 53 games. The goal-machine has five goals in three games this tournament and looks a fair bet to continue his scoring streak against Brazil. This bet also has the safety blanket of being valid in extra-time. |
| Gabriel Magalhaes & Erling Haaland to be booked | 22/1 @ Paddy Power (4.35%) | ⭐ | This, admittedly, is an outside bet, but fans of a cards double might be intrigued by the 22/1 for Erling Haaland and Gabriel Magalhaes to both be booked, as they were the last time Man City played Arsenal. Their duels at club level have rapidly developed into a spectacle in itself, and we’re hoping for more fireworks when they meet in the international arena. |
Odds correct at time of writing. Please gamble responsibly.
How both teams head into Brazil vs Norway
Brazil survived a major scare in the round of 32 after trailing Japan at half-time. Casemiro restored parity soon after the restart before Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli came off the bench to score a dramatic 95th-minute winner, sending the Selecao into the last 16 for an 11th consecutive World Cup.
The five-time champions boast an outstanding record at this stage, having won each of their last eight round of 16 ties since a 1-0 defeat to Argentina in 1990.
Yet, while Brazil swatted aside Haiti and Scotland in the group stages, they have notably struggled in their other two games against Morocco and Japan. However, with elite players such as Vinicius Junior, who has four goals and one assist, in their ranks they are a match for any side on their day, and they will be determined to put on a show against Norway.
Norway
Norway are continuing to enjoy a memorable return to the World Cup after a 28-year absence. Inspired by the prolific Erling Haaland, they opened with victories over Iraq (4-1) and Senegal (3-2), before making 10 changes for a 4-1 defeat to France after already securing qualification for the knockout stage.
Haaland and co returned for the round of 32, where the Manchester City striker scored a dramatic 86th-minute winner in a narrow 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast. It was his fifth goal of the tournament, which kept him firmly in the Golden Boot race.
Norway have never reached the World Cup quarter-finals, but Stale Solbakken’s side are full of confidence, having won 13 of their last 14 competitive matches, and scored 37 goals during qualifying. Morocco and Japan both exposed vulnerabilities in Brazil’s defence, and Haaland will relish another battle with his Premier league foe Gabriel Magalhaes.
Brazil team news
Rayan has impressed throughout the tournament and is expected to keep his place alongside Vinicius Junior and Matheus Cunha in attack. Endrick is pushing for a start after making a big impact off the bench against Japan and could be an option to replace Lucas Paqueta, who misses out with a hamstring injury he picked up in the last 32.
Bruno Guimaraes, who has already registered four assists this tournament, is set to partner Casemiro in midfield, while Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes will once again go head-to-head with Erling Haaland in one of the sport’s standout individual battles.
Raphinha is back in training and could provide an option from the bench. Neymar, meanwhile, has played just 14 minutes at this World Cup and, after not featuring against Japan, is unlikely to start but remains an impact option if required.
Norway team news
Erling Haaland may grab the headlines, and rightly so, this is an elite generational striker who has reached 60 international goals in just 53 caps – achieving the milestone quicker than any player in history.
But Norway’s attack is far from a one-man show. Atletico Madrid forward Alexander Sorloth and speedy RB Leipzig winger Antonio Nusa complete a dangerous front three alongside Haaland.
Premier League winning Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard will pull the strings in midfield, with Sander Berge and Patrick Berg the likely partners. However, manager Stale Solbakken could switch to a 4-4-2 if he wants greater control in the centre of the pitch.

Head-to-Head
Norway boast an impressive unbeaten record against Brazil, avoiding defeat in all four previous meetings with two wins and two draws.
Three of those encounters have come in international friendlies, but their most memorable meeting was at the 1998 World Cup. Needing a result to progress, Norway came from behind to beat Brazil 2-1 thanks to late goals from Tore Andre Flo and Kjetil Rekdal, which sealed the win and second place in the group behind the Brazilians.
| Date | Match Result | Competition |
|---|---|---|
| 28th July 1988 | Norway 1-1 Brazil | International Friendly |
| 30th May 1997 | Norway 4-2 Brazil | International Friendly |
| 23rd June 1998 | Brazil 1-2 Norway | 1998 World Cup |
| 16th August 2006 | Norway 1-1 Brazil | International Friendly |
Can Erling Haaland fire Norway into the quarter-finals?
This is set to be one of the standout ties of the round of 16 as five-time champions Brazil meet an in-form Norway side inspired by Erling Haaland, who are making big waves in their first World Cup in 28 years.
Brazil will be the favourites, but at some point Haaland is going to have an opportunity to extend his extraordinary goalscoring tally for his country. Sky Bet are offering odds of 6/4 for the Norwegian to score yet again, with the safety blanket of extra-time, should it be required.
Haaland is also set to go head-to-head with his favourite foe Gabriel, which is always a must-see. As tensions run high, tempers could flare, with Paddy Power offering outside odds of 22/1 for both players to be booked, as they were in their most recent encounter in the Premier League.
