England head into their final World Cup Group L fixture against Panama at the MetLife Stadium on Saturday evening knowing top spot remains within their grasp. Kick-off is scheduled for 10:00pm (UK time), with the Three Lions aiming to build momentum before the knockout stages. Find our Panama vs England predictions below.
Thomas Tuchel’s side will secure first place with a win unless Ghana defeat Croatia by three goals or more. Panama, meanwhile, have already been eliminated and will simply be looking to end their World Cup campaign on a positive note.
Panama vs England predictions and betting tips
| Our Prediction | Odds & Bookmaker | Confidence | Why We’re Backing It |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nico O’Reilly 1+ headed shot on target | 7/2 @ 10Bet (22.2%) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Nico O’Reilly could return to England’s starting XI and appeals at 7/2 to register a headed shot on target. The Manchester City defender has already shown his aerial threat at this tournament, going close with a header against Croatia before rattling the crossbar with another against Ghana. His record from set-pieces also backs up the selection. O’Reilly scored twice with headers in Manchester City’s Carabao Cup final victory over Arsenal earlier this year, and England will likely look to exploit dead-ball situations against Panama once again.. |
| England win to nil | 20/23 @ BOYLE Sports (53.5%) | ⭐⭐ | England have not been at their fluent best so far, but they still head into their final Group L fixture in a commanding position. Panama have lost both of their World Cup matches without scoring, and they could find it difficult to cope with another long spell without the ball against Thomas Tuchel’s side. England should dominate possession and create enough chances to secure top spot in the group. While there is room for improvement ahead of the knockout stages, this looks like a good opportunity for the Three Lions to return to winning ways. |
Odds correct at time of writing. Please gamble responsibly.
How both teams head into Panama vs England
England missed the chance to secure qualification with a game to spare after being held to a goalless draw by Ghana. Despite dominating possession, Thomas Tuchel’s side struggled to create clear-cut chances and were fortunate to avoid conceding a second-half penalty, although they remain top of Group L thanks to their opening victory over Croatia.
The Three Lions now need only a point against Panama to finish top of the group and avoid a potentially tougher route through the knockout stages. A victory would also provide a timely boost in confidence as England look to build momentum ahead of the last 32.
Panama head into their final Group L match knowing they can no longer reach the knockout stages after successive defeats to Ghana and Croatia. Thomas Christiansen’s side have remained organised throughout the tournament, but a lack of cutting edge in the final third has seen them fail to score in either outing.
With only pride left to play for, Panama will look to end their campaign with a positive performance against England. However, they face a difficult challenge against a side still battling to secure top spot in the group.
England team news
Thomas Tuchel could make a handful of changes for England’s final group match, although he is unlikely to rotate heavily with top spot still on the line. Reece James is a doubt after picking up a hamstring problem against Ghana, while Declan Rice may also sit out after taking a late knock and remaining one booking away from suspension.
Nico O’Reilly and Djed Spence are both pushing for starts, while Kobbie Mainoo could replace Rice in midfield. Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford have also pushed for recalls after making an impact from the bench, but Tuchel is expected to keep faith with Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, provided both are fit.
Panama team news
Thomas Christiansen is expected to stick with the side that pushed Croatia close, with Panama likely to line up in the same 5-4-1 system. Orlando Mosquera continues in goal behind a back five of Amir Murillo, Cesar Blackman, Jose Cordoba, Jiovany Ramos and Andres Andrade.
Yoel Barcenas and Carlos Harvey anchor the midfield once again, while Cristian Martinez and Jose Luis Rodriguez provide width in attack. Jose Fajardo leads the line, with captain Anibal Godoy targeting his first appearance of the tournament after recovering from injury.
Head-to-head
England and Panama have met only once before on the World Cup stage. The Three Lions ran out convincing 6-1 winners in Russia in 2018, with Harry Kane scoring three times and John Stones adding a brace in a dominant group game display.
England to improve after disappointment on Tuesday
Thomas Tuchel’s side were left frustrated after their goalless draw against Ghana, but they can bounce back here against a side who have yet to score at the tournament. Back England to win to nil, or take the 7/2 for Nico O’Reilly to have a headed shot on target with 10Bet.
