Egypt to win & BTTS

Egypt scored just three goals across their last two World Cup qualifications, but they’ve scored more than that in their first two games of this tournament. It’s clear that the Pharaohs strengths lie in attack and it’s through their forward play that they’ve managed to earn four points from an available six so far.

However, they have conceded in both of these games too, shipping an own goal in the 1-1 draw with Belgium and going one behind against New Zealand thanks to an early Fin Surman header. What’s more, Iran showed their attacking qualities in their own 2-2 draw with the Kiwis, with Ramin Rezaeian and Mohammad Mohebi scoring two well-taken goals in Los Angeles.

Iran know that only a win will be enough to take them through so even if the game is tied, we expect them to try and force the issue late on – but Egypt have the quality to pick them off on the break if that’s the case. We’re backing the Pharaohs to earn three points here which will see them top the group and exorcise the demons of 1990 and 2018 in emphatic fashion.

Mohamed Salah to score at any time

Even at the age of 34, Mohamed Salah remains the main man for this Egypt team and he’ll hope to have a big effect on this game. He did exactly that against New Zealand, scoring the second of his side’s three goals with a typically clinical finish to put his side ahead.

Playing in a more central role than he’s known for at Liverpool, Salah was a key part of almost every Egyptian attack in that victory – their first ever at the World Cup. Alongside the goal he took a total of five shots, completed two dribbles and made five key passes. Egyptian fans will always remember how important their talisman was in leading them to a first ever World Cup win.

The question now is whether they can repeat the trick to earn a second victory and top spot in Group G. If they are to do, expect Salah to be key. He scored nine times in nine qualifying appearances for this tournament and now has 68 international goals to his name in 118 caps. In a World Cup where the biggest names are really showing up, expect Salah to do the business again in Seattle.

Under 2.5 cards

Despite the opening game of the tournament featuring three red cards, the referees have clearly tried to let a bit more go at this tournament. At the time of writing the tournament average is 2.47 yellow cards per game – which is more than one full card less than the average at the 2022 tournament, which sat at just 3.55.

Iran have been shown just one yellow card in each of their two opening games and indeed despite Belgium being shown in a red in their 1-1 draw last time out, Team Melli have kept their cool. Even having just 32% of the possession in that game wasn’t enough to frustrate them. Only nine fouls were given against Iran in that game as they had their backs to the wall.

Egypt were shown two yellow cards in their opening game, a 1-1 draw with Belgium, but they too were only shown the one card as they ran out 3-1 winners over New Zealand in Canada, making a total of just eight fouls in the game. With cards not being shown as often and neither side being particularly high in the fouls category, it makes sense to go unders on the cards here.
