Spain to win & BTTS

Spain have kept clean sheets in their opening two games but, they’re facing a team with more attacking talent here. Marcelo Bielsa appears to have reconciled with Agustin Canobbio and the Fluminense forward repaid that faith by scoring in the 2-2 draw against Cape Verde. He was the stand-out attacking threat for Celeste in what was otherwise a fairly disappointing performance.

Aside from Canobbio, Uruguay can also call on Maxi Araujo. He has scored his team’s other two goals at the tournament and the much-maligned Darwin Nunez who was more of a threat when he came off the bench against Cape Verde, is another option. For all their issues, Uruguay have still looked like a team capable of scoring goals at this tournament. It’s at the other end where the real problems lie.

Spain were also held by Cape Verde in their opening game, but bounced back with a bang. A 4-0 mauling of Saudi Arabia has set them up nicely to secure top spot in the group. Although they know they’re through, la Roja will not want to take any chances here. Expect them to play on the front foot and look to create chances for the likes of Mikel Oyarzabal and Dani Olmo. That tactic worked did time and again in their last outing against the Green Falcons.

Rodrigo Bentancur to be carded

In a World Cup of negativity for Uruguay so far, one of the few positives has been the form of midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur. In both games the Tottenham Hotspur man has been solid and progressive in possession and been strong in winning the ball back too.

In the draw with Cape Verde, Bentancur made four interceptions won three aerial duels and won two tackles, one of which an outstanding last man tackle to deny what surely would’ve been a winner for the African minnows.

However, the 29 year old was also booked for a foul on Telmo Arcanjo and he has made four fouls already at the tournament. A combative player by nature, he was carded seven times in the Premier League this season and against a team that frustrate opponents with possession in Spain, Bentancur could easily find himself in the book again here.

Pedro Porro to get an assist

On the other side of the coin, another Tottenham Hotspur player could be worth watching here in Spain right-back Pedro Porro. Bentancur’s club team-mate was introduced to the starting line-up for the win after Saudi Arabia, presumably to bring some more attacking impetus from the full-back positions and he did exactly that as la Roja ran out 4-0 winners in their second game.

Porro turned in a fine performance too, creating three chances, completing three crosses from just six attempts and even taking a couple of shots at goal. He was defensively dependable too, winning three tackles and two interceptions. After a difficult domestic campaign with Spurs, it was a confidence-building performance for Porro against Saudi Arabia.

With Uruguay needing to win the game, there will be space for Spain on the counter attack and with his crossing ability, Porro will be expected to put balls into the box. If he continues with performances like the one against Saudi Arabia, he’ll rack up a few assists at this summer’s World Cup. That could start in this game against la Celeste, so we’re tipping him as part of our Uruguay vs Spain bet-builder here.
