    World Cup Group D permutations: Australia and Paraguay battle in winner-takes-all clash

    The final round of games of the 2026 World Cup group stage take place between Wednesday and Sunday. We’ve taken a look at the Group D permutations.

    We’ve broken down each group, with this article focusing on Group D. United States have already claimed top spot, while Turkey have been eliminated. Australia and Paraguay will battle it out for direct qualification.

    Below are all the permutations for those groups as well as who each team could face in the next round. It’s a little complicated but we’ve tried to make it as easy we can!

    United States are guaranteed to finish top of Group D. A win or draw against Turkey would see them win the group on points. If Turkey manage to pick up the victory, and either Paraguay or Australia win, United States would top the group but only by virtue of their superior record over both of those nations.

    Second place is very much up for grabs between Australia and Paraguay and it’s winner takes all when they face off in Matchday Three. A draw benefits Australia, as they will clinch second place if they pick up a point, regardless of the result in the other match.

    Turkey are guaranteed to finish bottom of Group D, even if they pick up all three points against co-hosts, United States.

    Who could the teams from Group D face in the next round?

    The winner of Group D, confirmed as United States, will take on the third place team from one of Group B, E, F, I or J. Current projections show that to be Ecuador.

    The nation that finishes second in Group D will take the nation that finishes second in Group G. At the time of writing, that side is Iran.

    The nation that finishes third in Group D is currently projected to enter the Round of 32. They will face the side that finishes top of Group K. That side is currently projected to be Colombia.
