New Zealand vs Egypt team news and predicted lineups

After both securing draws in their opening Group G games at the 2026 World Cup, both New Zealand and Egypt will be looking for a win when they face off at 2am (UK time) on Monday 22nd June.

New Zealand weren’t fancied much heading into the tournament but they were able to secure a point in their opening match. They showed great resolve to come back to draw 2-2 with Iran and will hope that is a building block to more success.

Egypt were also able to grab a point in their opening match. It was an impressive draw for The Pharaohs, too, with Belgium being unable to break them down. The two stalemates have left Group G wide open.

New Zealand vs Egypt team news

New Zealand team news

No significant injury or suspension concerns have emerged from the New Zealand camp heading into this fixture.

Darren Bazeley looks set to name an unchanged side after a hugely encouraging 2-2 draw with Iran on Matchday One. Elijah Just stands out as the form player and will remain central to New Zealand’s attacking intent, having scored both goals against Iran to take his World Cup tally to two already.

Captain Chris Wood leads the line with 90 caps and 45 international goals to his name – and after a difficult club season at Nottingham Forest, he looks sharper in the competitive World Cup environment.

Tommy Smith, at 36 and with 56 caps, provides valuable experience and is one of only two players in the squad who appeared in 2010. Bazeley will keep faith with the 4-2-3-1 that surprised Iran.

Egypt team news

Egypt head into their match against New Zealand with a fully fit squad and no major injury concerns . Manager Hossam Hassan has a complete roster following their draw with Belgium. The Pharaohs emerged from that physical encounter unscathed, which boosts their confidence.

Available players include key defenders Hamdi Fathy and Yasser Ibrahim. Both players survived the intense Belgium match without issues. Left-back Ahmed Fotouh and goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir are also fully fit and ready.

Captain Mohamed Salah remains the undisputed centrepiece of the team. He anchors the right wing and provides crucial attacking transitions. Omar Marmoush is locked into his role as the lone frontman. Hassan expects higher output from left-winger Mostafa Ziko to balance the attack.
