The Ivory Coast struck late to land a priceless 1-0 win over Ecuador in their 2026 World Cup Group E opener in the early hours of Monday morning (UK time).
This Philadelphia clash pitted two of the most evenly-matched sides in the tournament against one another, and that showed, with Ivory Coast needing until the 90th minute to find the winner through half-time introduction Amad Diallo.
The African side were dynamic throughout, spearheaded by the supremely talented Yan Diomande. And while Ecuador brought just as much excitement and industry, they lacked the focal point to make the difference, suffering what could be a hugely damaging defeat — especially as they’ll end the group stage against Germany.

Ivory Coast punish blunt Ecuador attack
There are numerous very good reasons why Ecuador once again entered this World Cup as dark horses.
Sebastian Beccacece’s side boasted a phenomenal defensive record through qualifying, conceding just five goals in 18 games, five clear of their nearest rivals, Argentina and Paraguay.
They have a backline anchored by Club Brugge talent Joel Ordonez, Arsenal’s Piero Hincapie and PSG’s Willian Pacho. In front of them, there is the tireless Moises Caicedo and a rotating cast of dynamic wide men, including Gonzalo Plata, Nilson Angulo and John Yeboah.
However, for all that undoubted quality, their biggest weakness was laid bare in this match: the lack of a goalscorer.
While the defensive numbers were incredible, that World Cup qualifying campaign yielded just 14 goals, which was less than two of the Conmebol sides that didn’t even reach the finals: Bolivia (17) and Venezuela (18).
Enner Valencia enters the tournament as his nation’s record goalscorer on 49 strikes. However, he’s the only player in the squad in double figures. What’s more, on Monday morning, he looked very much like a 36-year-old winding down his career in Liga MX.
There was no shortage of effort from Valencia. However, he simply could not get into the game, managing just 20 touches and eight completed passes, while he only had one shot and none on target.
Ecuador fire a blank vs Ivory Coast

Ecuador dominated 52% possession and completed 494 passes to Ivory Coast’s 469. However, the level of threat between the two sides couldn’t have been further apart.
Yes, La Tri hit the woodwork three times throughout the match, but Yeboah’s effort that rattled the bar was a speculative one from distance, while Valencia’s was from an acute angle. Too many times, Ecuador were guilty of controlling long spells of the game, only to get pushed back by an Ivorian counter, having failed to generate a genuine opening.
Ecuador didn’t lack any of the dynamism that the Ivory Coast offered. The African side simply had more effective, vibrant focal points that asked more questions of opposition centre-backs.
This is the conundrum Beccacece must solve if Ecuador are to be a true force at this World Cup, rather than a dark horse that fails to show up. They were certainly punished here.
Yan Diomande puts on a show amid Liverpool speculation
Given the transfer noise in recent weeks, there may have been a fair few Liverpool fans staying up into the early hours of Monday morning to get a glimpse of Yan Diomande. Based on the evidence of this game, they won’t be disappointed.
Sure, there were some moments in this match where Diomande showed that he is, indeed, still only 19 years old. A touch too far here, a misdirected pass there. However, the RB Leipzig winger was electric all night and truly rattled an Ecuador defence with the potential to carry them deep into this tournament — more on that later.
The right-footed Diomande lined up on his strong side in the first half, putting him toe-to-toe with Piero Hincapie, and to say he had the Arsenal title winner on the back foot would be an understatement. Diomande used his speed and skill to drive his opposite number back, and on more than one occasion, he turned Hincapie inside out and made him look like a distinctly average defender.
Yan Diomande’s metrics vs Ecuador

Diomande was switched to his more familiar left-wing role at half-time to make room for eventual match-winner Amad Diallo from the bench. While his influence on the game waned a little after the break, he always looked like he was on the verge of making something happen and kept Ecuador honest with his pace in transition.
The numbers speak for themselves. Diomande posted match-highs for touches in the opposition box (12) and chances created (5), was second only to Diallo (5) for completed dribbles (4), delivered three crosses and won 11 of his 15 ground duels.
All that, and you still had the feeling there’s so much to improve in Diomande’s game. There’s a serious talent here.
