Haiti vs Scotland stats and analysis: McGinn strike delivers historic World Cup win amid Gannon-Doak magic

Scotland got their 2026 World Cup campaign off to a strong start with a 1-0 win over Haiti in Foxborough, Massachusetts, in the early hours of Sunday morning (UK time).

John McGinn grabbed the only goal of the match in the 29th minute, firing a deflected effort into the back of the net after great work from Che Adams and Ben Gannon-Doak.

Scotland could have added a couple more throughout the match, but can also count themselves quite fortunate, with Haiti squandering a few promising openings of their own in a performance that proved they’re not here to merely make up the numbers. A free header from Frantzdy Pierrot wide of the far post in the 85th minute certainly had Scottish hearts in mouths.

John McGinn delivers historic win for Scotland

With McGinn, Scott McTominay and Lewis Ferguson in the starting line-up and Ryan Christie on the bench, midfield is definitely the strongest part of this Scotland squad. It was quite fitting, then, that one of that group delivered the goods here, with McGinn sneaking the ball beyond Johny Placide, albeit via a hefty deflection.

That sparked pandemonium in the stands at Gillette Stadium — or Boston Stadium, as it’s known for this tournament — and back home in Scotland. But it also carried huge significance for so many reasons:

  • This was Scotland’s first goal at a World Cup finals for almost exactly 26 years, since Craig Burley scored against Norway on 16th June, 1998.
  • Scotland’s last three World Cup goals have been scored by midfielders, since Mo Johnston scored against Sweden on 16th June, 1990.
  • At 31 years, 238 days old, John McGinn is the oldest player to score for Scotland at the World Cup, surpassing Kenny Dalglish, who was 31 years, 103 days old when he netted against New Zealand in 1982.

Of course, the most significant aspect of the goal was the win that it delivered. It’s the Tartan Army’s first at this or any other major tournament since that win over Sweden at Italia 90, 36 years ago.

The win wasn’t pretty, and the game looked as likely to slip away from Scotland as it did to swing even further in their favour.

But all that matters now is that they got over the line. If Scotland do manage to make the knockout rounds of a major tournament for the first time in their history, they’ll look back at this moment from McGinn as their greatest moment yet.

Ben Gannon-Doak the stardust for Scotland vs Haiti

At the opposite end of the age scale, Ben Gannon-Doak became the youngest player to appear for Scotland at the World Cup at 20 years, 214 days old. However, the performance he put in on the night was one of a player way beyond those tender years, and certainly not one of a player coming into this tournament off the back of just 105 minutes of Premier League action in 2025/26.

Gannon-Doak was electric throughout, using his pace to stretch the Haitian defence and give Scotland an outlet in the channels whenever they needed a pressure-relief valve.

All that speed and running translated to six attempted dribbles (two completed) and five touches in the opposition box from the Bournemouth youngster, alongside two chances created, one shot and two crosses into the penalty area. One of those crosses found Che Adams, whose effort was saved to allow McGinn to fire in the rebound and seal the victory.

Gannon-Doak also gave his all to shut down Haitian attacks during his 75 minutes on the pitch, making one tackle and one recovery, and contesting nine ground duels.

There’s plenty of industry in this Scottish team and a lot of goals from midfield. But in Gannon-Doak, the Tartan Army have a sprinkle of stardust on their team. A player who can make something out of nothing and put defenders on the back foot with his speed and skill.

Scotland top of the group: What’s next?

In a group containing five-time champions Brazil and 2018 semi-finalists Morocco, Scotland are top.

Okay, so there has only been one game, and Steve Clarke’s men have to play those two aforementioned giants. But those north of Hadrian’s Wall will be repeatedly checking the table and pinching themselves for a few days yet after a historic night.

The Tartan Army must now ramp up their preparation and performance as they remain in Foxborough to take on Morocco on Friday night, before they face Brazil in Miami in 10 days.

But this win could be worth its weight in gold, with one more point, or even just two narrow defeats, giving them a huge chance of making the knockout rounds as one of the best third-place teams.
