United States vs Paraguay Bet Builder Tips
United States to win
The United States carry the burden and the privilege of hosting a World Cup simultaneously, with SoFi Stadium set to provide loud home support. That home advantage is significant, and the squad Mauricio Pochettino has assembled is the most talented in American history. The US beat Paraguay 2-1 in a friendly just seven months ago, even without Christian Pulisic, Chris Richards, Tyler Adams, Malik Tillman and Timothy Weah – most of whom should feature here.
Paraguay gave up 14 goals across all 18 CONMEBOL qualifiers, which tells you exactly what they are: a team that will make this difficult and wait for their moment – not one likely to outgun the hosts. A United States victory all but secures progress from the group, with the new format in place. A Paraguay win reshapes it entirely, giving the US a clear imperative to attack from the first whistle. On home soil, with the better squad and recent head-to-head momentum, the US are the right side to back.
Both teams to score – Yes
While the US should win this, backing them to keep a clean sheet is considerably riskier. Paraguay went unbeaten in eight matches including wins over Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay during CONMEBOL qualifying. Paraguay will likely start with Miguel Almiron just ahead of midfield, with Ramon Sosa wide and Antonio Sanabria as the central striker.
The US defence, meanwhile, carries uncertainty with Chris Richards only just returning from an ankle injury. If he is absent, it leaves the backline potentially short of its best. The USA conceded twice in their warm-up defeat to Germany, suggesting defensive vulnerability remains. Paraguay have proven they can take their chances against quality opposition previously. This US backline gives them every reason for confidence that they can do it again.

Christian Pulisic anytime scorer
Pulisic is the focal point of this American attack and arrives at the tournament in excellent form. He scored and assisted in the warm-up win over Senegal. That ended an eight-match international drought and arriving at the tournament with real momentum. Pulisic has 33 international goals in 86 caps for the USMNT and has consistently delivered in high-pressure moments.
Playing on home soil in front of a capacity crowd at SoFi Stadium, carrying the full weight of a nation’s expectations, Pulisic steps onto precisely the stage he has been built for. Against a Paraguay side focused primarily on defensive organisation, his movement and directness in the final third make him the most likely man to break the deadlock.
Junior Alonso to be booked
Junior Alonso picked up four bookings in qualifying for this tournament and collected ten yellow cards this season. At 32 years old, Alonso should start alongside Gustavo Gomez and Omar Alderete. Paraguay will lean heavily on their defensive experience to keep the hosts at bay. That experience comes with an aggressive edge – Alonso is a physical, combative centre-back who defends on instinct and commitment.
They face a US attack that features Pulisic’s directness, Balogun’s movement and the pace of wide runners in behind. Alonso will face a relentless examination throughout 90 minutes. In a match where Paraguay will need to make numerous last-ditch interventions against a high-pressing home side, the chances of him picking up a booking are very high.
