Austria overcame Jordan 3-1 in Santa Clara to secure their first World Cup win in 36 years stretching back to 1990.
Ralf Rangnick’s side, who returned to the tournament for the first time since 1998, impressed throughout qualifying and jetted over to North America as many people’s dark horses.
Das Team headed into their opening match as the hot favourites to claim all three points but were made to work for the victory by debutants Jordan, who impressed in stages, but ultimately fell short.
Austria broke the deadlock in fine fashion when Romano Schmid scored a superb curler in the 21st minute. Jordan nearly responded immediately, hitting the bar, and would have been disappointed to go into the break a goal down.
However, the Arab nation bounced back five minutes after the restart through a lovely counter-attacking goal and finish from Ali Olwan, who made history by scoring his nation’s first ever World Cup goal.
But, instead of spurring them on, the Chivalrous Ones seemed to run out of steam as Austria went on to take the lead in the 76th minute through an unfortunate own-goal from Yazan Al Arab, who headed into the Jordan net from a corner.
Substitute Marko Arnautovic made sure of the points in the 12th minute of injury time when the veteran striker slotted home from the penalty spot to score his 48th goal for his country, extending his own record for Das Team, who will go on to play Argentina next, while Jordan face off against Algeria.
