South Africa endured a miserable start in their 2026 World Cup opener, losing 2-0 to Mexico on Thursday night.
It was Bafana Bafana’s first appearance at the finals since hosting in 2010, but they went down with very little resistance. South Africa were unable to carve out much quality in front of goal and their defensive display wasn’t much better either as they conceded two and had two players sent off.
The tournament looks bleak for Hugo Broos’ men now, but it’s far from over. With 32 of the 48 teams qualifying for the knockout phase, every point could be decisive, as is avoiding a disastrous goal difference.
South Africa World Cup 2026 fixtures
In a repeat of the 2010 World Cup opening fixture, South Africa had remained optimistic about their chances of at least replicating the 1-1 result from that game. However, things played out much differently in Mexico City, as Bafana Bafana conceded inside 10 minutes, shipped another goal in the second half and lost two men to make qualifying ore tricky for themselves from here.
They face Czech Republic on Thursday 18th June, and close out their Group A campaign with a test from South Korea on Thursday 25th June.

South Africa route to the World Cup
Africa’s World Cup qualifying is probably the hardest of them all and South Africa had a tough group. But they got through it. Just three points separated the top three in Group C, with only first guaranteed a World Cup spot. South Africa secured it, finishing one point clear of Nigeria and Benin. They won five of their 10 games, drawing three and losing two. It would have been a bit more comfortable, but one of South Africa’s defeats came via forfeit as they fielded an ineligible player in their 2-0 win over Lesotho.
South Africa key players for World Cup 2026
Top World Cup Golden Boot contender: Lyle Foster
- Key stat: Lyle Foster has scored 10 goals in 24 caps for South Africa.
South Africa did not rely on an out-and-out goalscorer during qualifying for the World Cup. They had four players top score, all netting two goals each. One of those four was Burnley’s Foster, and he’ll be hoping to fly the flag at the World Cup this summer. The striker is still only 25 and has scored 10 goals in 24 games for South Africa, which is a decent return. He has only scored three times in the Premier League so far this season, but the Clarets as a whole have struggled.
South Africa primary playmaker: Oswin Appollis
- Key stat: Oswin Appollis provided four assists in 2026 World Cup qualifying.
Oswin Appollis will be a threat on the wing for South Africa. He provided four assists in qualifying for South Africa, more than any other Bafana Bafana player. Appollis has also provided three assists in South Africa’s Premiership for club side Orlando Pirates. The 24 year old is capable of playing on either wing or as a No.10. In fact, he played all three positions in just four games at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
South Africa card magnets & top tacklers: Sphephelo Sithole
- Key stat: Sphephelo Sithole has averaged 1.51 tackles per 90 minutes in the Primeira Liga this season.
Sphephelo Sithole missed a large chunk of South Africa’s World Cup due to injury. But he’s back in their squad and is expected to be one of their midfielders — as he was at the Africa Cup of Nations. And he’s the ball-winner of the midfield. The 26-year-old has averaged 1.51 tackles per 90 minutes in the Primeira Liga this season, doing well for lower-ranked side Tondela. Sithole has also averaged 2.49 fouls per 90, with three total yellow cards so far.
South Africa rising star: Relebohile Mofokeng
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder has become one of the standout young talents in South African football. He has impressed for Orlando Pirates this season, enjoying the greatest attacking returns in a single campaign of his entire career so far with 10 goals and 8 assists across 27 league appearances. He’s been highlighted alongside more established attackers as one of the players capable of giving South Africa creativity and pace in the final third, which will be crucial if they’re to stand any chance of knockout qualification.
STAND-OUT STAT: South Africa became the first host nation to not qualify from the group stages when they finished third in Group A in 2010.

South Africa tactical analysis and formation
Team stats (average per game from last four matches):
- Corners: 4.25
- Shots on target: 5.75
- Shots on target conceded: 3.5
- Offsides: 2.25

Bafana Bafana can play in a few formations, albeit often with the same system. They have utilised a back three at times, but a back four appears to be their way forward. And a 4-2-3-1 seems to be the go-to formation. Here, South Africa can have Sphephelo Sithole and Teboho Mokoena as the double pivot, to protect the defence and be the link between them and the attack. The formation helps Oswin Appolis too as he can play across the front line, in any of the roles supporting Lyle Foster.

South Africa manager analysis
Hugo Broos is the long-serving South Africa manager, taking charge of his first game in 2021. And this isn’t his first spell with an African nation, overseeing 25 matches for Cameroon in 2016 and 2017. He did oversee their failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, but it was before CAF got the extra spots. South Africa finished level on points with Ghana in their group, and only missed out on goals scored. Broos did also lead South Africa to a third-placed finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations — and the round-of-16 in 2025.
