South Korea have become World Cup mainstays in the modern era and are taking part in their 11th consecutive finals in the USA, Canada and Mexico this summer.
The Taegeuk Warriors were comfortable in qualifying for this World Cup, topping their Round Three Group B without losing a game. However, this doesn’t have the feeling of a vintage South Korea outfit with the likes of Lee Jae-sung and Son Heung-min now reaching the latter stages of their careers.
A new generation of talent is coming through and the future is bright for South Korean football while being placed in Group A alongside South Africa, Mexico and Czech Republic gives them a good chance of progression from the group stages at least here.
Hong Myung-bo’s side will feel they have the opportunity to go deep in the tournament. They got off to a good start after coming from behind to defeat Czech Republic in their opener.
Considering how poor South Africa looked, there is a good chance for the Koreans to lock one of the two top spots in Group A alongside Mexico.
South Korea odds to win the World Cup
South Korea have been priced out as far as 400/1 with some bookmakers to win the World Cup this summer. That price seems fairly lengthy given the Taeguk Warriors’ consistency in qualifying for the tournament, but does point to that feeling that this isn’t the strongest South Korea side to reach the World Cup.
It also feels relatively short given that South Korea are in a group that doesn’t really possess any of the real superpowers of international football. Mexico currently lead Group A with the Koreans following closely.
With that in mind, progression should be relatively achievable – but facing the stronger teams further down the line may be where they come unstuck.
South Korea odds to win Group A
South Korea have been priced at around 10/3 with most bookmakers to win Group A, making them possible if not probable winners.
Unsurprisingly, Mexico are the favourites as they have the home advantage in all three of their group stage games.
South Korea World Cup top goalscorer odds
A prolific goalscorer in the Premier League during his time with Tottenham Hotspur, Son Heung-min remains the major goal threat for this South Korea side and he’s considered to be their best chance of winning the Golden Boot at this summer’s tournament, alongside PSG’s Lee Kang-in.
Both failed to find the net against Czech Republic, but were heavily involved in their side’s attacking actions.
