Man City 3-1 Bournemouth player ratings: Erling Haaland strikes again in key Premier League win

Manchester City returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 3-1 victory over high-flying Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon.

Pep Guardiola’s men went down 1-0 away at Aston Villa last week, but after beating Swansea in the EFL Cup, they put the Cherries to the sword with a first-half brace from Erling Haaland — either side of Tyler Adams’ equaliser — and a Nico O’Reilly strike on the hour.

The result lifts City back up into second place in the Premier League table, while Bournemouth slip to fourth.

Manchester City player ratings

Gianluigi Donnarumma: 53%

Despite his protests, Donnarumma will know he was nowhere near strong enough on Bournemouth’s goal. Made up for his error with a solid save to deny Kroupi just after half-time, among a clutch of other stops.

Matheus Nunes: 59%

Bombed up and down the right flank all afternoon, while also making two clearances, two tackles and an interception to help keep a dangerous Bournemouth side at bay. Won seven of his eight ground duels, including both his attempted dribbles.

Ruben Dias: 64%

A pretty quiet afternoon all told, but did chip in with six clearances, as well as completing 35 of his 38 passes (92%).

Josko Gvardiol: 62%

Like Dias, Gvardiol wasn’t particularly overworked defensively, with his remit for the afternoon more of a passing one.

Nico O’Reilly: 70%

Rounded Petrovic in the first half only to see his effort cleared off the line, but finally got his goal with a brilliant finish on the hour mark. Completed both of his dribbles, created one chance and chipped in with six clearances on a superb afternoon for the youngster.

Nico Gonzalez: 70%

Played a lovely chipped ball to Cherki on the first goal and was mesmeric throughout, completing 57 of his 63 (90%) passes, including seven into the final third.

Bernardo Silva: 58%

Completed a match-high 61 passes and was industrious defensively whenever required, making two tackles, one interception and four recoveries.

Rayan Cherki: 70%

Two very different but equally brilliant assists for Haaland, first setting the Norwegian on his way with a precise header, before picking the lock with an excellent pass around the corner. A great performance off the back of a goal and assist against Swansea in the EFL Cup.

Phil Foden: 61%

Finally got his first assist of the season and his first direct goal involvement since the Manchester derby, setting up O’Reilly for City’s third. Busy throughout and created three chances, but will hope to carve out more opportunities of his own soon, with just one shot attempted.

Jeremy Doku: 61%

Definitely among Doku’s best performances of the season so far, creating four chances, including two big chances, while completing five of his nine dribbles. Never let Jimenez rest with his speed and direct running.

Erling Haaland: 77%

Just another two brilliantly taken goals for an absolute machine of a striker. Has scored 13 of City’s 20 Premier League goals so far this season, while his second tonight meant he’d scored their last seven, before O’Reilly ended that run. The scary thing is, Haaland had six shots and could’ve scored a couple more, were it not for Petrovic’s efforts.

Key stats:

  • Shots: 6
  • Shots on target: 4
  • Goals: 2
  • xG: 0.77
  • Touches in the opposition box: 9

Savinho: 61%

A bright cameo, making some powerful runs at the Cherries’ defence and creating two chances.

Tijjani Reijnders: 72%

Kept things neat and tidy from the bench to help City close it out.

Bournemouth player ratings

Djordje Petrovic: 63%

Rounded a couple of times, including on Haaland’s second goal, but kept Bournemouth in the match at times with an impressive string of saves.

Key stats:

  • Saves: 4
  • Punches: 2
  • High claims: 1
  • Long ball accuracy: 50%
  • Goals prevented: 1.96%

Alex Jimenez: 52%

Struggled to cope with City’s dynamic left flank and was withdrawn just after the hour after picking up a knock.

Bafode Diakite: 50%

Stranded on Haaland’s opener, unable to chase the Norwegian down. Recovered relatively well after that and made some vital blocks and tackles.

Marcos Senesi: 52%

Caused a bit of havoc in the City box on set-pieces, while he was the desperate last line between the hosts and Petrovic, making a last man tackle, nine clearances, two blocks and a tackle.

Adrien Truffert: 62%

Far too deep on the second goal, keeping Haaland onside. That said, he fought well, winning a match-high nine duels.

Alex Scott: 53%

Delivered a wicked corner for Bournemouth’s goal and was tidy enough on the ball, but had a hard time trying to shut down the likes of Gonzalez and Foden.

Tyler Adams: 60%

Was the sharpest in the box to tap the ball home and drag Bournemouth level. Tidy on the ball throughout and very combative, with three tackles, an interception and a recovery. Came off near the end with a knee injury.

David Brooks: 63%

Applied a bit of light pressure on Donnarumma for the Bournemouth goal. Was very isolated otherwise, touching the ball just 26 times. He did, however, win all four of his ground duels and created one chance.

Marcus Tavernier: 55%

Clean with the ball and worked really hard without it, but was often left isolated.

Antoine Semenyo: 59%

Tried a couple of speculative shots, including one from his own half that forced a save from Donnarumma. Nowhere near his best, though.

Eli Junior Kroupi: 52%

Thought he’d opened the scoring inside the first minute, but was rightly pulled back for an obvious offside. Forced a good save from Donnarumma just after the break, but struggled to get into the game otherwise. Managed just five completed passes and 13 touches by the time he was withdrawn.

Evanilson: 39%

Failed to get into the game at all, touching the ball just once in 28 minutes.

Justin Kluivert: 54%

Completed all 15 of his passes but didn’t do a great deal with them.

Lewis Cook: 66%

Got stuck into the midfield battle right away, but couldn’t stop City seeing the game out.

Ryan Christie: 54%

Made little impact from the bench.
