Marcus Rashford analysis: Why Hansi Flick and Rashford are a match made in heaven

Marcus Rashford looks at home playing for Barcelona, fitting the German’s existing system like a glove.

The 27-year-old forward has joined the Spanish giants on loan this campaign, after spending six months at Aston Villa on loan last season, following a falling out with Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim.

Rashford has made 12 appearances across all competitions so far this season, being directly involved in nine goals, scoring five and providing four assists.

The season-long loan includes an option to buy for around £30.3million, with £25m upfront cost and a further £5.3m in add-ons.

Hansi Flick’s system

Hansi Flick has implemented a clear style of play since taking over at Barcelona, combining their possession-dominant heritage with his direct attacking and high pressing principles.

Barcelona averaged 69.2% possession in La Liga last season, increasing from 64.7% in the 2023-24 season. They’re also also attempting more through balls per 90 minutes, increasing from 2.58 in the 2023-24 season to 3.42 per 90 in 2024-25.

Flick’s side look to play a high line defensively, pressing from the front with an emphasis on winning the ball back as quickly as possible.

This then allows Barcelona to control the ball, looking to move the ball through the thirds, penetrate with a high volume of runs in behind and get plenty of shots off.

Under Flick, Barcelona scored 2.68 goals per 90 last season, averaging 17.84 shots and creating 3.32 big chances per 90.

The 2025-26 season has started in a similar stead. Barcelona have scored 2.67 goals per 90, taking 21.11 shots per 90 and creating 2.67 big chances per 90.

Playing to his instincts

Another key aspect of Flick’s tactics is utilising minimum width, especially with his left-sided wide man, something that saw Raphinha excel last season, netting 34 goals and providing 22 assists in 57 games.

With Alejandro Balde at left-back, a capable runner on the overlap in order to offer width, the left-winger will often stay slightly higher and slightly narrower, being the main outlet in transition for direct balls forward and allowing more touches closer to the box.

This makes the role of Flick’s left-winger highly important, having to make relentless runs in behind to stretch the pitch, combine in close proximity outside the box and get a high volume of shots away.

Enter Rashford, a player Flick himself stated “Barcelona needed” going into the new campaign, who seamlessly fits the left-wing role in the German’s system.

Allowing the England international to play off the left, be a threat in transition and closer to the box in settled possession, means he can play to his strengths and instincts.

Rashford is averaging 4.39 shots per 90 this season with a shot accuracy of 44.44%, creating 2.6 chances per 90 and attempting 4.71 take-ons per 90.

The future?

The biggest question of just how important Rashford can be for Barcelona will be answered when everyone is fit and available in attack, with Raphinha, Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski being last season’s front three.

In their starting 4-2-3-1 shape, the next evolution could be getting all four of Rashford, Raphinha, Yamal and Lewandowski in the team together, with Raphinha or even Yamal playing as the No.10.

But Fermin Lopez may have something to say about that, already scoring five goals in seven games this season.

With Barcelona looking to battle on all fronts, having options will be key later in the season. And, if anything, the injuries to all three of Raphina, Yamal and Lewandowski as of late only prove the utility of an attacking asset like Rashford, who can fill all attacking roles and fit Flick’s attacking style of play perfectly.
