Ryder Cup format explained
The Ryder Cup is a three-day match-play team event between Europe and the United States. There are 28 matches in total, each worth one point (in the event of a draw, both teams are awarded half a point).
On Friday and Saturday, there are two sessions per day: foursomes (alternate-shot) in the morning, and four-ball (best ball) in the afternoon.
- In foursomes golf, two teammates play one ball alternately, taking turns hitting shots and alternating who tees off on odd and even holes.
- In four-ball golf, each of two teammates plays their own ball, and the team’s score for each hole is the lower of the two players’ scores.
On Sunday, all 12 players from each side compete in singles matches, one-on-one.
To win the Cup outright, a team needs 14½ points. As defending champions, Europe would retain the Cup if the result is a 14–14 tie.
