BC Place: History

BC Place was opened in 1983 and has been the home of Canadian Football League side BC Lions from the very beginning. It has also hosted multiple iterations of the Vancouver Whitecaps, including the current Major League Soccer side. When it was first built, the stadium had an air-supported dome, which stood until 2010. The roof was then renovated to give it its iconic look today.

In Canadian Football, BC Place has hosted 10 Grey Cup matches, most recently in 2024. Outside of the Vancouver Whitecaps, BC Place has played host to big football matches.

It held nine games at the 2015 Women’s World Cup, including the final, which the United States won against Japan. It also hosted Canada’s last-16 win over Switzerland, the hosts’ only game at the stadium that tournament.

In 2025, Canada played Honduras in the group stage of the Concacaf Gold Cup at BC Place, winning 6-0.

But it hasn’t just been used for both types of football. Baseball and rugby union have also been played at BC Place. And, perhaps the biggest non-footballing event, BC Place was the main stadium for the 2010 Winter Olympics and Winter Paralympics. They were the final events held at BC Place before the roof was deflated for the final time.
