How both teams go into Southampton vs Wrexham
Southampton’s return to the Premier League last season didn’t go to plan. Saints looked on course to becoming the worst team in Premier League history until late in the campaign. Although they eventually managed to better Derby County’s points tally, it wasn’t by much. Southampton took just 12 points from their 38 league games, winning two and losing 30.
But there will be optimism surrounding their promotion chances. Highly-regarded manager Will Still is now at the St Mary’s helm, and Southampton are second-favourites to seal promotion back to the Premier League.
Wrexham continued their rise up the football pyramid last season. The Welsh side have now experienced back-to-back-to-back promotions. It’s lifted them from the Nations League to the Championship in just three seasons. Fans will be dreaming of another promotion, this time hitting the top flight.
But they won’t want to get too ahead of themselves. This is Wrexham’s first season in the second tier of English football in 43 years — a four-season stay in the Second Division. And then they didn’t finish in the top half once. This is a new Wrexham, though, with financial backing and the football script-writers on their side. They’ll be itching to start off the Championship with a victory over a former Premier League club.

Southampton have had a quiet summer in terms of new arrivals, with just two new faces added. Saints will be hoping to have Taylor Harwood-Bellis available after an ankle injury towards the end of last season.
Wrexham team news
Wrexham have made four new signings this summer to try and bolster their squad. Ollie Rathbone suffered an ankle injury in pre-season and is unlikely to make it back in time. Andy Cannon is also expected to miss out, but Wrexham will hope for positive news on the fitness of Jay Rodriguez.
