Women’s Super League
Manchester City go into the 2026/27 WSL season as champions. Chelsea had entered 2025/26 as holders, because they had won six league titles in a row. In 2024/25, they broke the record for most points in a season (60). Indeed, they became the first team to go through a 22-game campaign unbeaten. It was a significant achievement for Chelsea, who were in their first season without Emma Hayes.
But Man City wrapped up the 2025/26 title with a game to spare. The Citizens had a strong first season under Andree Jeglertz, winning 17 of their opening 21 games. They lost their opening game against Chelsea, then won 14 of their next 16 matches. Man City dropped points in two of their final four to make a nervy finish. However, the damage had been done early on.
Chelsea secured a top-three finish and a spot in the 2026/27 Champions League. Meanwhile, Arsenal and Man Utd fought it out for the final qualification place.
Women’s Champions League
Arsenal ended the 2024/25 campaign as European champions. The Gunners beat Barcelona to win the Champions League for the second time in their history. Stina Blackstenius scored the only goal of the final in Lisbon, ending Barcelona’s recent grip on the Champions League.

The 2025/26 season brought a new format for the Women’s Champions League. After just a few years of a group stage, the competition changed again to mimic the men’s format. Instead of four groups of four, 18 teams were placed in one league for the new phase. Each team played six games, with the top four advancing automatically to the quarter-finals. Teams placed fifth to 12th contested the play-offs for the final four spots.
Barcelona, Lyon, Chelsea and Bayern Munich finished in the top four, sealing automatic qualification to the quarter-finals. The former three all finished the league phase unbeaten. Arsenal and Man Utd just missed out on the top four, but were seeded for the knockout phase play-offs. And both sides got through, setting up some interesting ties.
Arsenal beat Chelsea in the quarter-finals, while Man Utd were knocked out by Bayern Munich. The Gunners’ title defence came to an end against Lyon, while Barcelona beat Bayern Munich in the other semi-final. So the most successful side in the competition’s history, and its recent dominators, faced off in May’s final.
