It’s tough to say we’re going to go ahead and beat teams like France and Portugal but I think we can compete more than we have done in the past.”
Of course, football isn’t played on paper and the run to the final hasn’t been straightforward. But England are there. The Three Lions have won just two of their six games in 90 minutes, their first against Serbia and the semi-final victory over Netherlands. The other four games have finished level after 90 minutes, with one won in extra-time and another on penalties.

England came into Euro 2024 as favourites, though that was as much down to optimism from English fans as anything else. The Three Lions remained favourites for most of the tournament, again due to optimism but also their potential run to the final on paper. Now they’re in the final, they are no longer favourites, but quiet optimism is growing after England beat the Netherlands 2-1 in the semi-final.
England have averaged just 0.94 xG per game at Euro 2024, the lowest of any team to have made it to the quarter-finals. At the same time, England have averaged 0.89 xG conceded per game, in the top five at Euro 2024. If they keep things tight, there is a feeling that England have a chance.

1. Spain
People weren’t sure what to think of Spain going into Euro 2024, but La Roja have been the best side at the tournament, a status confirmed by beating hosts Germany in the quarter-finals. They’re the one team with a perfect record, winning all three of their group games without conceding a goal, before beating Georgia 4-1 in the last 16, Germany 2-1 in the quarter-final and France 2-1 in the semi-final.
They were seriously impressive against Croatia and Italy, though they relied on an own goal to win the latter, showing signs of wastefulness in front of goal. Some were wondering if they’d got stuck into a bit of flat-track bullying by beating Albania and Georgia in their final group match and last 16 tie, respectively. However, wins against Germany and then France have affirmed what most were thinking about Luis de la Fuente’s side. It’s theirs to lose.
