The meanest defences
Spain boasted the meanest defence at the World Cup 2026, and it carried them to the title: they conceded just one goal in the entire tournament — Charles De Ketelaere’s equaliser for Belgium in the quarter-finals — and kept a clean sheet in the final. Co-hosts Mexico also kept clean sheet after clean sheet until England knocked them out in a 3-2 Round-of-16 thriller.
The biggest wins
Germany’s 7-1 demolition of Curacao is the heaviest win of the tournament, closely followed by Canada’s 6-0 rout of Qatar. Portugal (5-0 v Uzbekistan), Senegal (5-0 v Iraq) and the Netherlands (5-1 v Sweden) also ran up big scores.
The fastest goals
Three players struck inside the opening two minutes: Germany’s Leroy Sane, Paraguay’s Miguel Galarza and Morocco’s Ismael Saibari all found the net at the two-minute mark.
The numbers behind the champions
Spain are world champions, and the World Cup 2026 stats tell you how: the tournament’s meanest defence, conceding once in eight games, allied to enough quality in the final third to see off every challenge. Kylian Mbappe took the Golden Boot and Michael Olise the assist crown, but it was Spain who lifted the trophy.
