    Mexico vs Peru: what’s at stake?

    Márquez’s reign begins in Baltimore on Saturday against Colombia and continues here, and the two fixtures could hardly be more different in character. Colombia are a settled side who went out of the World Cup on penalties without losing. Peru did not qualify at all, finishing ninth in CONMEBOL on 12 points, and arrive in New Jersey having already played the United States in Orlando three days earlier.

    For Mexico this is the more useful of the two nights. The crowd at Sports Illustrated Stadium will be overwhelmingly theirs, the opponent is beatable, and a new manager gets to see his ideas work rather than merely survive. Given that they topped their World Cup group and reached the last 16 for the first time since 1986, the raw material Márquez inherits is better than most incoming Mexico coaches have had.
