Mexico had their best World Cup in forty years and changed manager anyway. They won all three group games against South Africa, South Korea and Czechia to top Group A, then beat Ecuador 2-0 for a first knockout win since 1986, before England edged a genuinely good round-of-16 tie 3-2. Javier Aguirre left by mutual agreement afterwards, and Rafael Márquez — his assistant through the tournament, and long earmarked for the job — steps up. This is his first night in charge.
Colombia’s summer ended more cruelly. They beat Ghana 1-0 in the round of 32 and then drew 0-0 with Switzerland over 120 minutes in the last 16 before going out 4-3 on penalties. No defeat, no elimination on the field, and a long flight home regardless. They arrive in Baltimore as the side the sportsbooks trust more, which is not something that happens often to opponents of Mexico in the United States.
Team news and talking points
A first game under a new manager is the hardest kind to predict, and Márquez inherits a squad with genuine momentum but no reason to believe it will be picked the same way. He has one of the most decorated playing CVs in Mexican football and an obvious mandate to build towards 2030 rather than defend what Aguirre left him. Colombia have their own transition to manage after a tournament they arguably should have gone further in.
