Argentina vs Bolivia: what’s at stake?
This is Argentina’s first match in their own country since losing a World Cup final, and their first in Córdoba in more than four years. They went down 1-0 to Spain in New Jersey, Ferran Torres scoring in the 106th minute after Enzo Fernández had been sent off at the end of normal time, leaving them to play the whole of extra time a man short. Around 28,500 tickets have been made available at the Kempes, and this has the feel of a homecoming rather than a fixture.
There is a second layer to it. This is the first of a short run of friendlies that will close out the international careers of the squad’s senior figures, with Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul and Giovani Lo Celso expected to join up for the final game of the run against Benin in Buenos Aires on October 6 rather than for this one. Bolivia, for their part, came closer to the World Cup than they have in a generation — they beat Brazil to reach the inter-confederation playoff and then lost the decider 2-1 to Iraq.

Messi is not expected in Córdoba, with the farewell scheduled for Buenos Aires the following week, so this is a night for the players who will carry the next cycle. The run of fixtures also allows several of the squad’s suspended World Cup players to serve their bans in games that do not matter. Bolivia arrive at sea level, which historically strips a good deal of their threat, and without the tournament to show for a qualifying campaign that deserved one.
