Done deals: Transfers around Europe you might have missed this week

Published: 10:14, 26 August 2020

The 2019/20 season has only just finished but with a quick turnaround to the new campaign, there has been little time to focus on transfer stories.

Ligue 1 has already kicked off their 2020/21 season while English football has its opener in the Community Shield this weekend, with various clubs currently taking part in pre-season friendlies.

The wall-to-wall football has meant that only the biggest of transfer stories, including Lionel Messi’s bombshell and Chelsea’s impending triple signing spree, have dominated the headlines.

As things stand, the most hyped deals are yet to actually go through. But there are done deals that have happened including Joe Hart’s move to Tottenham, and we’ve got you covered with some others that you might have missed over the past week….

1. Pedro

From: Chelsea
To: Roma

Everyone and their dog knew that Pedro was moving to Roma at the end of his Chelsea contract, but the deal has finally been confirmed by the Italian club. The Spaniard leaves Stamford Bridge after five years, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League during his time in London.

2. Jeff Hendrick

From: Burnley
To: Newcastle United

Newcastle fans aren’t happy with the way the club is being run, but the signing of Jeff Hendrick from Burnley has given them something to smile about. The Irishman frequently received praise during his time at Turf Moor for his work rate and capability of playing across the midfield.

3. Aaron Ramsdale

From: Bournemouth
To: Sheffield United

Sheffield United moved quickly to replace Dean Henderson in bringing Aaron Ramsdale back to the club. The 22-year-old came through the Blades’ academy before leaving for Bournemouth in 2017 and was one of the Premier League’s busiest goalkeepers in his unsuccessful attempts to keep the Cherries in the division last term.

4. Jordan Hugill

From: West Ham
To: Norwich

Jordan Hugill signed for West Ham in 2018 and sent a message to the fans saying he couldn’t wait to “walk out with all the bubbles”. But two years on he is still waiting for that chance and may never get it, having left permanently for Championship club Norwich.

5. Armando Broja

From: Chelsea
To: Vitesse (loan)

Not many people outside of Chelsea fans may know of Armando Broja, who made his first-team debut in the 4-0 Premier League win over Everton last season. But the Albanian teenager has proven that the link between Chelsea and Vitesse is very much alive, being spent to the Dutch club on loan for the season.

6. Antonio Adan

From: Atletico Madrid
To: Sporting CP

Being deputy to Jan Oblak must be tough, knowing you’re hardly ever going to get a game and in two years at Atletico Madrid Antonio Adan managed just eight appearances. He has now moved on to Portuguese club Sporting CP, adding a bit of experience to their goalkeeping ranks.

7. Javi Garcia

From: Real Betis
To: Boavista

Former Real Madrid, Manchester City and Benfica midfielder Javi Garcia has been on the move once more, joining Portuguese side Boavista. The 33-year-old had spent the past three years at Real Betis, initially joining from Zenit, and made 64 appearances although over half of those (33) came in his first season.

8. Reinier

From: Real Madrid
To: Borussia Dortmund (loan)

Following the success of Achraf Hakimi’s two-year loan move, Borussia Dortmund have taken another young Real Madrid prospect for the next two seasons, this time in teenager Reinier. The Brazilian attacking midfielder only joined Real in January and made a handful appearances for Castilla but will now look to gain first-team experience at a club renowned for giving youngsters a chance.

9. Valentino Lazaro

From: Inter Milan
To: Borussia Monchengladbach (loan)

When Lazaro joined Newcastle on loan last summer there was a chance of the move being made permanent, but the player’s agent has admitted his lack of playing time ruled that out.

Max Hagmayr said: “We do not know the reasons for this choice, nor why he no longer played frequently. From there our decision was made, we chose a new adventure.”

Lazaro has now completed another loan move, this time to Borussia Monchengladbach where he will be hoping to get more time on the pitch.

10. Bruno Varela

From: Benfica
To: Vitoria Guimaraes

Once Benfica’s number one goalkeeper, Bruno Varela was replaced and eventually sent on loan to Ajax to try and get his career back on track. But the 25-year-old played just three times, getting stuck behind the impressive Andre Onana. He has, however, now left Benfica permanently, joining fellow Portuguese side Vitoria.

11. Eljero Elia

From: Istanbul Basaksehir
To: Utrecht

Once on the books at Juventus, Werder Bremen and Southampton, Eljero Elia has spent the past three years in Turkey with Istanbul Basaksehir, helping them win the league last season. But he is now back in his native Netherlands, signing for FC Utrecht.

12. Nuri Sahin

From: Werder Bremen
To: Antalyaspor

Nuri Sahin was a regular starter for Werder Bremen in the first half of last season but eventually lost his place in the starting XI and then team, as they fought against relegation. The club did manage to stay in the Bundesliga, but they will take on 2020/21 without Sahin, who has moved to the Turkish Super Lig, joining Antalyaspor.
