West Brom have quietly climbed to sixth on the back of the division’s meanest defence. Ten goals scored and eight conceded in eight games is a low-volume profile, but four wins and two draws have been enough under James Morrison, a considerable improvement on a 2025/26 campaign that ended with a 21st-place finish. The Squawka Score is a metric developed to assess a player’s performance relative to other players in the same position. RB: Nolan Galves – 62% – The lowest rating in the side, and the numbers explain it: five starts have brought nine possessions regained in his own third and almost nothing else. Right-back is the one position in this XI where Morrison has not found an answer.
RCB: Nathaniel Phillips – 68% – Fifty clearances, 19 aerial duels won and nine blocked shots all lead the club, with 10 tackles won and 47 progressive passes alongside. One error leading to a goal is the only mark against a commanding first season back at this level.
LCB: George Campbell – 65% – Fifty-seven progressive passes is the most of any Albion player, with 37 clearances, five blocks and two clean sheets. Campbell has been the ball-playing half of the partnership and has been charged with a single error leading to a shot.
LB: Callum Styles – 69% – An enormous two-way contribution. Twenty-two tackles won and 26 possessions regained in his own third lead the club, and so do 13 chances created; add two goals, 39 passes into the penalty area, 106 into the final third and 41 duels won. Styles has been West Brom’s most complete performer.
RM: Harry Whitwell – 66% – A goal, an assist and two clear-cut chances created from six starts, with 38 duels won and seven completed take-ons. Eleven occasions beaten one-on-one is the most in the side, which is the risk of asking a young wide player to defend a flank in a 4-4-2.
RCM: Jayson Molumby – 70% – Ninety-one passes into the final third and seven interceptions from six starts, with two clear-cut chances created. Molumby does the unglamorous half of the midfield job and does it without fuss.
LCM: Ousmane Diakité – 64% – Forty-four duels won and 10 interceptions both lead the club, with 13 aerials and 18 clearances from central midfield. Four yellow cards is the highest figure in the squad and the main reason this sits below the average.
LM: Isaac Price – 70% – Albion’s most productive attacker. Two goals and an assist from a club-high 19 shots with nine on target, plus nine chances created, 55 passes into the penalty area and 122 into the final third, both club bests. He takes 21 corners, four direct free-kicks and has scored a penalty.
RST: Aune Heggebø – 63% – Two goals from five starts and 369 minutes. Two big chances missed is the frustration, and the sample is small enough that the rating should be treated lightly. Heggebø has yet to nail down the shirt.
LST: Jimmy-Jay Morgan – 67% – Three goals and three assists, the joint-best return at the club, with 30 touches in the opposition box, the most in the side. Thirty-six duels lost and 14 fouls are the price of leading the line, and two big chances missed keep the rating in check.
