Lincoln 2026/27 Championship Preview
It was an historic 2025/26 campaign for the Imps, winning the League One title and earning promotion into the second tier after a 65-year wait. Michael Skubala’s side recorded 103 points, finishing 12 ahead of second-place Cardiff City. The champions held an impressive 67% win rate across the campaign, turning their form completely on its head from November when going on an incredible 29-game unbeaten run, with 23 of those victories.
Lincoln were crowned champions despite having the lowest average amount of possession in the league. They broke teams down with incisive transitions, scoring the most set-piece goals in the division. The Imps provided plenty of spark and diversity, with only Cardiff scoring more goals than them, and Stevenage being the only side to equal their 19 clean sheets tally. Most interestingly, Lincoln have developed a knack of beating teams above them over the last few seasons, laying strong reasoning to suggest that they can punch above their weight in the Championship.
However, they face an incredibly tough challenge after head coach Michael Skubala was poached by Bristol City. The Imps unconventionally chose to appoint Chris Cohen and Tom Shaw as joint head coaches. The pair had previously been working under Skubala as his assistants, with Lincoln’s sporting director citing how close they were to being in the role already. Despite a good amount of promise and continuity with this duo, Lincoln may have to put their rise on temporary hold to consolidate their position in the second tier. But that doesn’t look beyond their means having held onto their core group of players and made a couple of decent additions.
