That milestone took him to within touching distance of La Roja’s all-time record cap holder, a feat which he has since broken.
The 33-year-old Real Madrid stalwart is now his nation’s leading appearance maker, and he continues to play a prominent role for the one-time World Cup winners.
He has since picked up another 20 caps, taking his total to 170. This may be enough to transcend his Spanish contemporaries and predecessors, but it is not quite enough to claim top bragging rights across all of Europe.
