Everybody loves a goalscorer, with fans paying close attention to the top scorer charts in every European league.
Robert Lewandowski ended the 2019/20 Bundesliga campaign as top scorer once again and Lionel Messi leads the way in La Liga, while there is a close race in the Premier League with Jamie Vardy struggling to recapture his early season form.
But there is a goalscoring accolade above a domestic league’s Golden Boot, Torjagerkanone or Pichichi Trophy in the form of the European Golden Shoe.
The Golden Shoe is awarded to the player that has scored the most goals in a top division of a European league, pitting the tallies of the best players from the best divisions directly against each other.
The award has been handed out since 1967/68 and was first given to the outright top scorer, regardless of the strength of league or games played. However, since the 1996/97 season, league weightings have been added to give players in tougher divisions a better chance against those who ply their trade in less competitive divisions.
Across both criteria, a total of 38 players have won the European Golden Shoe. But, just 11 of those have managed to secure the accolade on more than one occasion.
