A Mexico City derby, Antonio Valencia and a Puskas nominee: Test your Liga MX knowledge for 2020

We may think Europe’s top five leagues, domestic cups and the Champions League conjure up some of the most incredible football moments, rousing atmospheres and intense derbies, but you would be hard pressed not to put Liga MX in this bracket.
The Mexican top flight is home to arguably the most iconic stadium in world football, the Estadio Azteca, boasts the “second and third most followed clubs in the world” (according to a 2012 study), and has been the humble abode to legends ranging from Eusebio to Marcelo Bielsa and, of course, the Real Madrid immortal, Hugo Sanchez.
And if, for some reason, you haven’t been keeping up to date with the Guardianes 2020 Liga MX, then fear not, as you have arrived just in time for the final, set to be contested between heavyweights Pumas, who overcame a four-goal deficit in the semi-final to reach the showpiece, and Club Leon.
Pumas were 4-0 down to Mexico City rivals Cruz Azul in the first leg of their contest before Andres Lillini rallied the troops and masterminded a 4-0 win of their own in the return fixture, progressing by virtue of a higher standing in the league table. Leon, meanwhile, edged past Chivas in a tense semi-final.
With both these clubs boasting seven Liga MX titles apiece, only one can draw level with the fourth most successful club in Mexican history, Cruz Azul, and add an eighth piece of silverware to the trophy cabinet.
So, if ever there was a time to start watching Liga MX, then that time is now. And in the spirit of the much-anticipated final that await us, we’ve put together a quiz to test your knowledge on Mexican football.
