This is a nation steeped in innovation and a trailblazing outlook for the beautiful game. When we think of great footballing sides, we think of Ferenc Puskas’ Hungary, Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest, Pele’s Brazil, and of course, Rinus Michels’ Oranje.
Throughout the ages, the Netherlands have wowed and dazzled us in equal measure, both at club level — for those lucky enough to have a Dutchman on the books — and on the international stage — their absence from the 2018 World Cup was certainly felt.
There have been some fine Dutchman to wear the famous orange strip over the years, but also some of the game’s most prolific goalscorers. The most deadly has been Robin van Persie, a man who needs no introduction on these shores.
This penalty-box assassin was not only finding the back of the net at an alarming rate in the Premier League for Arsenal and Manchester United, but also for his nation as well, as he netted a half-century of goals during his playing days, the most of any Dutchman.
