The demons of 2001/02 have firmly been banished with Bayer Leverkusen lifting the Bundesliga title for the first ever time. It was a title celebrated across the globe as the titans of Bayern Munich finally fell, ending an 11-year domination of the Bundesliga.

Although Bayer Leverkusen are by no means a small club, nobody expected them to be the ones to dethrone Bayern Munich this season. They were still meant to be a work in progress under Xabi Alonso, who took over in October 2022 when the club were in the relegation zone. But here we are.

And that title win had us feeling all reminiscent about previous underdog title winners in Europe’s biggest leagues. What can you remember about them?
