Erling Haaland was the man of the night for Manchester City as they secured their spot in the 2022/23 Champions League quarter-finals by beating RB Leipzig 7-0.
An 8-1 win on aggregate, Haaland scored five goals at the Etihad, breaking a number of Champions League and club records in the process. But he wasn’t the first player to score more than a hat-trick in the Champions League, not by a long shot. He wasn’t even the first player to reach five goals in a game.
Focusing just on the Champions League era, a player has scored at least four goals in a single game on 19 different occasions, ranging from the group stages to the knockout rounds.
Haaland’s five goals against RB Leipzig came in just 57 minutes, and the Norwegian was robbed of a chance to grab the first ever Champions League double hat-trick, taken off in the 62nd minute.
“I told him [Pep Guardiola] when I went off ‘I would love to score a double hat-trick’ but what can we do. I had to go off,” Haaland told BT Sport after the game.
For now, Haaland just accept his spot as one of just three players to score five goals in a single Champions League game. But can you name the other two? And how is your knowledge on those players to have netted four in a game?
We’ve given you a starter with Haaland, which means you’ve just got 18 occasions left to guess – but some players have achieved the feat on multiple occasions, making things slightly easier.
Nevertheless, there are still a few rogue names in there that’ll seriously test your memory. Good luck!
