At the end of the tournament, there is a Golden Glove award for the best goalkeeper in the tournament but, unlike in the Premier League, it isn’t handed out for clean sheets alone. In 2018 Thibaut Courtois won the Golden Glove and did keep a joint-tournament-high three clean sheets, but minutes played would have seen him miss out. However, the fact that he also made 27 saves as Belgium went to the semi-finals and eventually finished third, saw Courtois come out on top.
Will he win it again this year? Or will someone else take the crown? Keep track of the top 10 clean sheets and saves below for the 2022 World Cup.
One man who will be looking to contest Courtois for his crown is Guillermo Ochoa, who recorded a clean sheet in Mexico’s opening game against Poland, already equalling his tally from 2018. Ochoa has been a man who only really comes into the spotlight at the World Cup, making himself a household name in 2014 and then 2018 having been largely unknown due to spending a large part of his career away from Europe’s top leagues. Although he had spells in France and Spain, not too many will have kept note of his time with Ajaccio, Malaga and Granada.
In 2014, Ochoa will be remembered for making six saves in a goalless draw with hosts Brazil and four years later he made 25 saves overall. Only Courtois (27) made more saves than the Mexican but he played three more matches, as Mexico’s journey ended at the last 16. Against Poland on Tuesday, Ochoa added two more saves to his portfolio the first of which proved to be a very important one from a Robert Lewandowski penalty.
Just one day later Courtois followed suit, saving a penalty from Alphonso Davies, ensuring their battle continues.
