Turkey are through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.
Under the ill-fated leadership of Şenol Güneş at Euro 2020, the Crescent-Stars finished bottom of Group A, scoring just one goal and conceding eight.
They went into that tournament tipped to be dark horses. But, statistically, Turkey finished as the worst-ranked team. However, with a couple of surviving members in Germany, they are making amends.

Turkey’s potential knockout stage opponents
Tournament football can be strange sometimes, and it was definitely a case that Turkey did better to finish second in their group as opposed to winning it. They faced Group D winners Austria in the last 16 and won 2-0. Turkey will now face Netherlands another Group D side.

Then, in the semi-final, it will to be England or Switzerland. The final would pit Turkey against either Spain or France, who contest the first semi-final.
Turkey key players for this year’s European Championship
Turkey top Euros Golden Boot contender: Hakan Calhanoglu
- Key stat: Hakan Calhanoglu has had more shots than any other Turkish player at Euro 2024.
Merih Demiral is Turkey’s top scorer at Euro 2024, the only player to net more than once. But he isn’t going to be their scoring hope, not least because he’s now suspended for their next to matches. Of the remaining five players with one goal, Hakan Calhanoglu feels most likely to continue scoring.
The Inter Milan midfielder has had eight shots at Euro 2024 so far, more than any other Turkish player. He was somewhat missed in their last 16 game against Austria, but will return for the Netherlands clash.
Turkey primary playmaker: Ferdi Kadioglu
- Key stat: Ferdi Kadioglu has created 11 chances at Euro 2024 so far.
What a tournament Ferdi Kadioglu is having. The full-back has shone as part of Turkey’s side and is their most creative outlet, out-performing the likes of Calhanoglu, Arda Guler and Orkun Kokcu. Only Christian Eriksen (13) and Kevin De Bruyne (11) created more chances than Kadioglu’s 10 in the Euro 2024 group stage.
He has also completed five of his eight attempted take-ons, proving tough for opponents to beat.
Turkey card magnets & top tacklers: Hakan Çalhanoglu
- Key stat: Hakan Çalhanoglu has committed five fouls at Euro 2024.
Ferdi Kadioglu also leads Turkey for tackles at Euro 2024 on 14, but Hakan Calhanoglu has been putting himself about with five so far. Crucially, Calhanoglu has also made five fouls, more than any other Turkey player.
Playing in a deeper role, it’s easy to see why Calhanoglu is a lot more involved defensively, despite still pulling the strings. Calhangolu has also been booked twice, one of a handful of players to hit the suspension threshold in the group stage.
Turkey rising star: Arda Güler
Real Madrid won the battle for Arda Güler’s signature last summer, reminiscent of Martin Odegaard’s courtship. The highly-rated Turkish forward, unfortunately, likened to a young Lionel Messi in some quarters, left boyhood club Fenerbahçe only to sustain multiple injuries. But he returned from injury in time and has scored one goal at Euro 2024 so far, a rocket in Turkey’s opening win over Georgia.

Turkey tactical analysis and formation
Turkey team stats at Euro 2024 (average per game):
- Corners: 6.25
- Corners conceded: 4.75
- Shots on target: 4.75
- Shots on target conceded: 5.0
- Offsides: 1.0

Even though his time in charge of Turkey has been brief, Vincenzo Montella has the Crescent Stars playing his way. He sticks to a 4-2-3-1 with Calhanoglu capable of playing both as part of a double-pivot and in the No.10 role.
The attack is bolstered by the wonderful Kenan Yildiz who can play anywhere across the front line. His versatility has allowed Baris Alper Yilmaz to lead the line, with Arda Guler also terrorising defenders.
