The 2024-25 Serie A season is over with Mateo Retegui claiming the capocannoniere award.
The Atalanta summer arrival netted an impressive 25 goals in 36 appearances to help his side qualify for the Champions League. Moise Kean was Retegui’s nearest rival, way back on 19 goals, while there was another gap between him and Bologna’s Riccardo Orsolini and another Atalanta player, Ademola Lookman, both on 15.
Forwards from the top two title contenders came next, with Romelu Lukaku helping Napoli become champions with 14 goals, level with Marcus Thuram of runners-up Inter.
Also featuring in the top 10 was former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay who, alongside Lukaku, performed brilliantly to pick up a winner’s medal.

Mateo Retegui’s record-breaking season
Retegui took the Serie A capocannoniere award, and it’s been a special season. Despite being an Italy international, this was just Retegui’s second season in Serie A, having spent the rest of his career in his native Argentina.
In his first season in Italy, Retegui scored seven goals in 29 games for Genoa, hampered slightly by injuries. While the goalscoring return wasn’t outstanding, he had performed enough to pique Atalanta’s interest following Gianluca Scamacca’s ACL injury. And it was a good decision for Atalanta.
Retegui has blown his previous return out of the water, with 25 goals in Serie A this season. Retegui has become just the second Atalanta player to take the capocannoniere after Filippo Inzaghi in 1996-97 (24). He’s also the first-ever Atalanta player to score 25 goals in a single Serie A campaign.
