Premier League 2024/25 most assists: Early favourites, predictions & last season's Playmaker Award standings

Published: 18:40, 19 January 2025

There’s a tight battle for the 2024-25 Premier League Playmaker Award.

Mohamed Salah is at the top of the assist charts with 13, three more than Bukayo Saka — the only other player on double digits. Salah won the Playmaker Award in 2021-22 and will be hoping to become just the second player to take it more than once. Kevin De Bruyne currently stands on his own there, winning the Playmaker Award three times.

Ollie Watkins is Playmaker Award holder, after his 13 assists last season. He has four assists so far in 2024-25.

How many of the top Premier League playmaker’s assists have been ‘intentional’?

Assists aren’t always the best metric when judging a player’s creativity. By definition, an assist is simply the ‘final touch from a teammate which leads to the recipient of the ball scoring a goal’. It could have rebounded off a player into the path of a teammate who scored. That’s where intentional assists come in.

An intentional assist is when a player makes the final pass that leads to a goal, with the intention of creating a chance for a shot. Of course, the teammate still needs to score for an assist to be recorded, but the intention from the passer proves the creativity.

If we take just intentional assists into account, Mohamed Salah still leads the way with 12 of his 13 assists so far being intentional. The outlier there is his assist for Darwin Nunez against Aston Villa, not meaning to pass the ball as he ran in on goal before being brought down. His lead at the top remains three, with nine of Saka’s 10 assists being intentional.

Player Intentional assists Assists Difference Minutes Played
Mohamed Salah 12 13 -1 1,676
Bukayo Saka 9 10 -1 1,275
Jacob Murphy 6 6 0 944
Son Heung-min 6 6 0 1,213
Mikkel Damsgaard 6 7 -1 1,449
Antonee Robinson 6 7 -1 1,800
Elliot Anderson 5 5 0 1,139
Amad Diallo 5 6 -1 1,233
Rayan Ait-Nouri 5 5 0 1,549
Bruno Fernandes 5 6 -1 1,570

Who would have won the 2023-24 Premier League Playmaker award if only ‘intentional’ assists counted?

What about last season? As mentioned, Ollie Watkins took the Playmaker Award last season with 13 assists. But only eight of those have been deemed intentional, dropping Watkins out of the top 10 by virtue of his minutes played. Instead, the award would have been shared between Kevin De Bruyne and Pascal Gross. Both players provided 10 assists in the Premier League last season, all of which were intentional. Pedro Neto is the only other player in the new top 10 to not have any assists taken away, with nine. He sat just outside the overall top 10 last season.

In the intentional assist top 10, three players had their tallies cut by two — with two assists deemed unintentional. They were Brennan Johnson, Mohamed Salah and Anthony Gordon. Kieran Trippier, Martin Odegaard, Leon Bailey and Anthony Elanga all had one assist deemed unintentional. Watkins and Palmer were the most effected overall, with five of their assists deemed unintentional. Palmer, who finished second behind Watkins for the Playmaker Award, dropped to six intentional assists from 11 assists overall.

Player Intentional assists Assists Difference Minutes Played
