The Designated Player rule results in clubs piling huge portions of their budgets into attacking areas, with goalscorers, playmakers and wingers the most spent-on areas.
For a team to compete in MLS, they simply must have players who can create a high volume of quality chances and lay up plenty of assists.
And there are several of those in the league right now, with Inter Miami alone calling upon the legendary duo of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. However, they didn’t finish top of the pile during the 2025 regular season when it came to assists.
