Ecuador return to the World Cup for the first time since competing in Brazil eight years ago.

Gustavo Alfaro’s La Tri navigated an extremely competitive qualifying campaign, finishing fourth in the South American standings behind Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay to seal an automatic place in Qatar’s winter showpiece.

Their quest to reach the last 16 for only the second time began with a routine 2-0 victory over host nation Qatar.

Our recommended Ecuador bet for World Cup 2022

Group A is an interesting group and one Ecuador will certainly fancy their chances of qualifying from, especially with three points already on the board.

But the question will be whether they do so as group winners or runners-up. If it’s the former, then a potential route to the quarter-finals could be opened unless there is a shock Group B winner.

Who could Ecuador meet in the knockout rounds?

If Ecuador were to win Group A, they would face the runners-up of Group B, which consists of England, USA, Iran and Wales, in Al Rayyan on December 3. England are favourites to win Group B with Wales tipped to finish second. If the South American nation get through that, it’s still a tough run to the World Cup final with the likes of Argentina, France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Brazil, Portugal and Uruguay all potentially to come.

Ecuador emerging player to look out for – Moises Caicedo

Premier League fans know the promising potential of Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo.

The 21-year-old has already amassed more than 25 international caps. So far during the 2022-23 campaign, Caicedo has been a near ever-present for the Seagulls, missing just two Premier League games.

Ecuador tactical analysis & likely formation at the World Cup

Since taking charge in August 2020, Alfaro has utilised a plethora of formations, before going 4-4-2 for the opener against Qatar.
