Paraguay gave themselves a good chance of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup knockout stages thanks to their 1-0 win over Turkey.
The action started early with Matias Galarza Fonda opening the scoring inside two minutes, breaking the record for the fastest goal at this summer’s tournament. Paraguay benefitted from Turkey’s slopping passing, winning the ball in the middle of their half. A couple of neat passes were exchanged before Galarza let fly from outside the box, beating the goalkeeper low into the bottom corner.
But the game looked to be turning in Turkey’s favour just before half-time, as Miguel Almiron was sent off in a historic moment. Almiron was given his marching orders for covering his mouth while talking to Mert Muldur, which is now a red card offence.
Turkey turned up the pressure in the second half but were unable to truly test Orlando Gill in the Paraguay goal. They had 32 shots in total, with 2.90 Expected Goals. But the European nation only hit the target five times.
The result leaves Paraguay third in the group on three points, ahead of their final game against Australia. Turkey, meanwhile, are destined to finish bottom of the table with their World Cup dreams over.
