Turkey ended their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 3-2 victory over already-qualified co-hosts United States.
The United States had already confirmed top spot in Group D so had nothing to play for going into their final match. As a result, there were a few changes to their starting XI, with an eye on the knockout stages.
But the co-hosts still took the lead inside three minutes from a corner, with Auston Trusty the scorer having been left alone at the back post. Their advantage didn’t last long, with Arda Guler getting Turkey’s first goal at the tournament to equalise. The Real Madrid man had linked up well with Baris Alper Yilmmaz in a move he started just inside the United States half.
United States though they had retaken the lead from another set-piece but it was ruled out for offside. Turey were ahead just after the half-hour mark and Arda Guler was involved once more in the buildup, playing through Orkun Kokcu who set up Yilmaz.
Another set-piece did bring United States’ second goal, this time a throw-in. Turkey thought they had dealt with the initial danger, but Sebastian Berhalter responded with an excellent low strike on the edge of the box.
The game looked to be ending in a draw but Kaan Ayhan tapped in from close range to steal the win for Turkey, ending their tournament on a high. But United States’ attention will now turn to their last-32 game against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
