Switzerland comfortably advanced to the World Cup Round of 16 by beating Algeria 2-0 in Vancouver.
The clinical victory ended 88 years of knockout misery for the Swiss national team.
Algeria started brightly and controlled early possession at BC Place. However, Switzerland struck with their first meaningful attack after ten minutes. Youngster Johan Manzambi burst down the left flank with incredible pace, delivering a precise cross to the unmarked Breel Embolo. The forward made no mistake and tapped home from close range.
Algeria struggled to break down a well-organised Swiss five-man midfield. Their best chance came when Ibrahim Maza dragged a low shot wide before half-time.
Switzerland then doubled their advantage just one minute after the restart. A poor defensive clearance from Rafik Belghali fell to Dan Ndoye. The winger placed a powerful effort past goalkeeper Luca Zidane from the edge of the box.
Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez had an opportunity to respond quickly. His central shot was easily blocked by defender Manuel Akanji.
Fabian Rieder also missed a late chance to add a third goal for the Swiss. He somehow scuffed his close-range shot wide with the goal at his mercy.
Murat Yakin’s side comfortably held on to book a Last-16 clash against Colombia or Ghana, and will remain in Vancouver for their next game on Tuesday 7th July.
