Belgium progressed through to the last-32 of the 2026 World Cup as Group G winners following a 5-1 thrashing of New Zealand, who have bowed out in the group stages once again.
Belgium had been held by Egypt and Iran in their opening two games, but ran out convincing winners over New Zealand in Vancouver thanks to a Leandro Trossard brace and goals from Kevin de Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku, and Alexis Saelemaekers, while Elijah Just scored for the All Whites to finish the tournament on three goals.
Trossard broke the deadlock from close for Belgium just before the half-hour mark, before he doubled his country’s lead shortly after the break. De Bruyne scored a fine third in the 66th minute, before Just pulled one back six minutes from time.
However, that just jolted Belgium back into life as Lukaku and Saelemaekers both struck straight after to give them a 5-1 win and set-up a last-32 clash with a yet-to-be-named best third-place finisher.
